Rookie

It is good to let everyone know that I am a rookie on the board. 34, male, from South Africa. I have been keeping fish for as long as I can remember but i am busy setting up a new 88gal reef tank that I am sure I will need a lot of help with as I am not experienced in Marine at all. I have been tropical all the way getting quite large and out of control like many of us. I am now in the process of reducing the amount of tanks I have and only keeping 2 tanks, one will house discus and the other my reef tank.

I look forward to picking your brains

Welcome to fishlore, working on setting up a 5.5 gallon reef tank, just a tad smaller. Hope to help you out where I can. Mike has SW tanks also.

Re: Rookie

I hope that I have lots to share, our water for example is very good, many people think that because I am in Africa we all live in huts and have lions in our back gardens !! this is true in some cases but not in mine. Our water is so good here that when moving my big tanks 100gal + I just fill them up with the hosepipe from the garden and bob's your uncle. Our tap water is very soft, ph 7.

I have a very limited knowledge of reef tanks and even though have been fishkeeping and breeding for years, I confess I am having second thoughts, some of the issues putting me off is the lighting requirements, electricity is always a concern, I have a swimming pool, tanks, borehole run a business frm home ! I am not sure I really want to install a MH 1000w light and run it for for 10 - 12 hours. The second thing putting me off is the diet requirements - freshwater is cool, I use tetra bits ( prima ) for my angels and smaller cichlids like keyholes.. Tetra Doromin for my big cichlids like my Golden Deacons and festive cichlids and Tetra min flake for my rummy noses, harlequins etc and then sinking pellets for my clown loaches, poka dot loaches etc, once a month or so I treat them with blood worm.

Reef tanks I am learning all the time, for example I am not really sure of the role or relationship calcuim plays so wee will see what happens. I really had my heart set on Moorish Idols, they have 2 at our specialist store but I am not sure if I can manage to get them to feed properly so I am knocked back to clowns for the time being. This is going to take weeks of research and having an empty tank is going to be ****.

Another issue that is nagging me id the temp. We have a climate and a half, in winter I have no real problems, we only get to about 7 - 10 degrees in the worst scenario, most days in winter are 18 - 20 degrees, in summer however even removing the heaters from the teanks can yield a tank at 28 - 30 degrees, with a reef tank does this mean I have to install a chiller unit or can the inverts etc withstand a 30 degree tank for a week or so.

I will take pics, the tank should be built tomorrow.
