Hi from a FishLore newbie!

Hello all,

I have been trawling this site for about a week now, and decided to join.
I just picked up a new ~40g Aqua One UFO 700 tank, in addition to my ~26g Aqua One 620 and an old glass 2 footer (currently disused).

I have 5 fish, looking to introduce a few more loaches once my 40g finishes cycling.

It's been great reading all the posts - I wanted to join due to the depth of knowledge and experience that appears to be in this community!

I will take some pics of my tanks once they are fully set up, so you can all enjoy them as much as I do!

Thanks,
Bubbles

thanks guys!
Yes, I happened to notice the fetish with pics... I just have to get my hands on our camera; I know it's around here somewhere!

The name has been with me for many years, as was my goldfish Bubbles.
He sadly left us a few months ago. He was bigger than my hand, and I could pat him! RIP Bubbles....

By the way, the marble angel off in the 26g on his own is named Gandalf, and he measures about 8in from top fin to bottom. He is on his own because he's the biggest so-and-so I have ever met! But only towards other fish... he loves me...

I have some great personalities in my tanks!

On a side note, what are people's thoughts on Stress Zyme versus Stability? A friend of mine breeds catfish, including peppered & 'tigers', and highly recommends Stability. We have trouble in Australia finding good products to cycle tanks. Cycle is a waste of money, and we can't get BioSpira.
Thoughts anyone?

Welcome, Bubblynutter!
In regards to you question, I am afraid I haven't used either product.I used to foolishly use Cycle until I wised up and weaned my tank off of it, now I only use Prime and think it's the best!
Is Stability something to use to cycle a tank or condition the water? Doesn't Seachem make that of am I thinking of something else?

Anyhow, sounds like you have some great fish, enjoy this site!

Hi GoGreen, thanks for the welcome!

Yes, Seachem makes Stability. Since making my last post, I read all over this forum that Stability is not recommended, as it does not contain the bacteria for converting nitrites to nitrates.

Apparently another Aussie recommends a new product, AquaSonic Bioculture as a replacement for TSS.
We can't get TSS easily in Oz, so I was looking into alternative methods.

I am suspicious of my new tank, and think that I have not been cycling effectively. I have an API master kit on the way, but was using the test strips (yes, I know, I've learnt my lesson!) which ran out a few days ago. I'm going home tonight to do a pwc.

To give you guys some background:
I started fish keeping about 5 years ago, with my trusty Bubbles. When I moved to the big city, I decided to upgrade to tropical, and Bubbles decided he liked the warmth. Thus, an upgrade to a 2ft glass, and a couple of tetras. My LFS told me to add about 10 neons, and an albino suckling catfish. All at once.
Needless to say - disaster. Firstly - I bought the fish and the heater the same day. No proper cycling, and had NEVER tested for more than pH. So I went back for more neons. More neons died. About 3 survived, for a few months, so I bought two angels.

A few months passed and my neons died, so I picked up 3 clown loaches and 2 dwarf gouramis. At the suggestion (again) of the lfs.

Anyway, I started to get concerned about the amount of fish in my tank, as they were rapidly growing (duh). And Bubbles passed away. So I upgraded to the ~26g all in one AquaOne. Same night - added fish. By this stage, a helpful lfs member had suggested I only add 2-3 fish at a time, so that was a good start.

I don't know how, but most of my fish survived. Until last November, when Melbourne had a MASSIVE heatwave, and my tank made most of my fish crispy, except my two angels.

I left my tank until early Jan, still grieving from such a massive loss. Finally, my marble had grown WAY too big, and was bullying my black so much he was continuously hiding and stressed. So I picked up two 3 spot gouramis to 'distract' my marble. Didn't work, obviously. And I lost a gourami after a few weeks. I also got 2 clown loaches about a week later. I put a spare heater in the old 2ft (which I had kept running but without heat) and separated the marble to his own tank.

I decided early Feb that I was a terrible 'mother', and bought the 45g all in one AquaOne. I added fish after 3 days, to make sure the water was coping and I didn't buy a dud tank. In it I put all the fish you can see in my profile. The marble went back to the 26g on his own (very happy boy, but I want to get him a mate).

So anyway, as you can see, I have made many many mistakes. I finally decided that I should research my beloved hobby a bit more, and find out why things are going so wrong - hence FishLore.
I will be seeding my new tank with some media from my 26g tonight, and hopefully that (combined with a pwc) will see my tank through until my test kit arrives.

After that essay - anyone have anything to add? And yes - I will never EVER take advice from a lfs ever again!

Hi Bubbles. I think I must be the Aussie who has used Aquasonic bioculture. It worked well on one tank and I am just in the early days of a 400litre tank and it seems to be doing the job there too.
Did you have any trouble with your dwarf gouramis (aside from the heat wave. Nightmare.)? I'd love to get a couple but I keep hearing about DG disease and it puts me off. I've been wondering whether the DGs in Australia have the same trouble. Of course I have no idea where they come from... the wild, captivity bred etc....

Glad you have joined us. Don't worry about the past, you are on the right track now. I can't believe how many tanks and fish I have gone through in my lifetime. Only a few years ago did I hear about the nitrogen cycle, fishless cycling and on-line support. With the help and support of FL I have 4 tanks up and running and so far no casulties.

I don't know where they get them from either. My two were doing great (or so I thought) until that heatwave. The temp shift really upset them, and over the next 2-3 weeks I lost about 20 fish. I haven't tried again with them yet.

I just got my newest two clown loaches home! Slowly building up the stocks, up to 4 CL now... my other two are very happy!

Thanks everyone for the welcome, gives me warm & fuzzies!
Found my last test strip today, so after doing a 30% PWC on both tanks I tested the 46g. Everything is looking really good - no nitrites detected and nitrates about 5ppm (I have a few plants!). So went for a trip to the LFS to get the 2 new CL and picked up some java moss.
Fingers crossed, I am on the right track. I'm hassling my partner to find the digital camera, and will report back with some pictures! (keep in mind, they are a work in progress! )

Oh wow. That must have been awful to lose so many fish so quickly. Good to see it hasn't put you off. I worry about the heat. I am on the outskirts of Sydeny and days where it hits greater than 40 are way too common. My house is well insulated though. Hopefully it will start getting cooler as autumn hits but a few people have mentioned bags of ice as one way yo get the temp down when it is bad.

Congrats on you new CL. I love to watch them play.

I just took a heap of pics with my phone camera, trying to figure out how to get them from my phone to the computer!

Will update VERY shortly - stay tuned!

Claudicles - I have a house for insulation - hot in summer, cold in winter. We also had a power outage for a couple of hours 2 days ago. I flipped out, trying to figure out what to do! Lucky it came back on pretty quick. I've been reading all the posts about the power outages on the east coast of the US - not cool! I feel really bad for you guys.

OK - photos are uploaded. Some of the quality isn't that great - took them on my phone. Hope you all enjoy!
Feel free to suggest some aquascaping ideas; I am still in the early stages.
