Balloon Mollies with Neontetras

Hi there, this is my first thread and I am new as of today. I have a question about my tank mates in my 40 gl. freshwater tank. I have about 9 Neontetras and two female Balloon Mollies one is white the other is white with black spots. I have a concern about the Neontetras eating my Balloon Mollie's babies when they give birth. My tank is a 40 gl. I have large plastic plants, live medium size plants, live moss, Clay pots, gravel, and a few caves. I also have a sponge on my intake tube for my carbon filter. I keep my temperature at 76 to 77 degrees. Thanks any information would be great!

welcome to fishlore!!!
Your neons will eat the fry if they catch them..but so will the mother mollies...usually wiht some moss and hiding spots, they can get away and are pretty fast......good luck!

Thank you

I will make more hiding spots then and watch closely to see if they have given birth or not. I appreciate the advice.

Welcome to fishlore! The mothers and the neons will eat the baby balloons, as mentioned above. You can purchase a breeder box, a plastic floatinig box that allows the mother to give birth in peace (without harrassment) Also, there is a champer in the bottom that the babies fall into, keeping them safe from the mother. Afterwards, you can take the piece that separates the mother and fry out and raise them in the contained until they are too big to be eaten. But, I'd be careful, I don't think there is a high survival rate with balloon molly babies. I think they are prone to complications...
