I'm new to Fish Lore and the online world of forums in general. I've been keeping fish since my first metal framed slate bottom 5 gallon tank that I got for Christmas in 1972. I still have that tank. I worked in
LFS while in college and after to support my addiction. I've bred many different types of fish, including discus (my favorite). I've kept marine tanks, including a berlin style way back when and I've had a reef tank filled with
live rock I collected while on my honeymoon in the Bahamas. It took a week to get the rock home and through customs but it turned out beautifully (lost the tank to a power outage). I now keep only
freshwater fish, mainly for the ease of water changes and $$. I suffered a setback last winter during an ice storm, we only lost power for 4 days but I lost some good fish. My tanks are not show pieces and I don't have the latest and greatest. I believe water changes are the single greatest thing you can do to maintain healthy fish and I don't get caught up in water parameters and testing. I also have a koi pond, currently under reconstruction although the cold weather has brought that to a screeching halt. It will be 6000 - 7000 gallons when finished. I can't wait for spring so I can get my feet wet again.
