Thank you for your help

My Report on Fish, Fish Lore and Why I Joined Fish Lore
by Saccade, age 29

I'm joining because I've been reading this forum a bit recently since getting a bigger fishtank and a few more fish.
Well, Claire got it really. She just needed me to carry it home from the shop. In a blizzard. Through the frozen underpass (only a little yellow snow there), up the icy steps of Archway and finally tackling, "the Hill"...
Treacherous stuff.

I like the pleco best. (t)s/he(y) are like armoured prehistoric giants, but in miniature and proportionately less fearsome. Probably with fewer teeth, though not having yet taken my pleco to the dentist, I couldn't say for sure.
The canary one is pretty cool, too. He's pretty strong and a good swimmer.

The tank got a bit dirty once - we went away - and a few were gulping because of that.
The canary developed a red sore from exposure to air (i assume) much like the nancy fancy goldbulbs (at least, that's what they're called in Fish Tycoon idk what they're really called. i don't like them) developed when they had inflated swim bladders for being such lame fish.
It's getting better now they're in a new tank, but they are all breathing really fast. Except the pleco.

I read here that I need to run a load of tests and now have some inkling as to what the possible causes of all this could be. Will complete these at earliest opportunity. stop. Have shopping list. stop. ETA: next weekend. stop.
Claire or I (Pete) will ask about it then, if what is already suggested doesn't resolve matters re: hyperventilating fish.

(maybe the solution is to make tiny paper-bags and hold one over the fish's mouth with tweezers, constantly assuring it that everything will be okay so long as it focuses on its breathing..?)

So that is why I am joining this forum.

Also, for any site staff reading this:
I would like to say thank-you for sending me the PM to which I could not reply. It contained a number of interesting and useful links.
I figure I need to post a certain number of times in order to have access to that privelidge. I will say here instead, as I have a suggestion for you.

The links that you give, I think that if you put a www.fishlore.com instead of making it so that copy and paste is the fastest option to click-thru.
Maybe it is my browser or something. I'm on a Macbook this evening.
From my experiences as updater and moderator on other forums, the easier it is for someone to do something, the more likely it is that they do it.
I often work on software so you can imagine the type of innane questions that are received. Especially as there is an FAQ and a search tool. Patience is a virtue, so they say. I can't say I really know what that means.

---

Anyway, so concludes my report.
Thank-you for your time.

(that one is so funny ^^)

Since you can neither receive or send pm until you have 50 posts I don't know what pm you are referring to. If you would like to email the communication you say you have received to me click my name and then send the email.
again welcome to FishLore!

welcome to FL, Pete and Claire. Good luck with your tank.

Fish gasping for air do that because the can't breathe. This is usually because not enough oxygen in the water, or because the have gill damage due to exposure to ammonia. Sounds to me like your fish may have ammonia poisoning (coming home to dirty water sounds like a likely ammonia spike).

I know you didn't ask for advice, but here it is :
See if you can purchase some Prime water conditioner, and do daily partial water changes using Prime. It should help tremendously. Even without Prime, use whatever conditioner you have on hand and do water changes. I would say you should start with a 50% one today.

Thanks for the advice.

We had thought that it may be something like ammonia poisoning, but have yet to verify that.
I am a little adverse to using any unnecessary chemicals in the tank, but if you say that the water conditioner will help to sort out the problems and is beneficial, I think we will give it a go

There has been a development that has made me think we should isolate some fish. I have spoken about that in another thread.

Butterfly - When I click on yr name, I only get 3 options and none of those is to send you any kind of message.

I will show you this screenshot so you can see that I did receive one.
If you like, I will post a screenshot of the contents, though I thought I should keep those private for the moment.

It is a PM from Mike, with information about a pinboard and fishlore FAQ's and a few other handy things.
Screenshot of PM
As you can see, I cannot send messages, only read the same one over and over again.
Please do not delete it. It has useful things that I would like to keep, but without cluttering my bookmark bar.
