Hello from Canada!

Hey there all. Name is Brent and I am from Ontario,Canada. I used to have a nice 40 gallon tank a while back but I had a few troubles with it and gave it away. Though for christmas I got a little 10 gallon tank and figured I'd give it another shot. So far I just have one fish in the tank, he is Raffi and he is a Betta. I just set up the tank friday, so I am letting it cycle a while before I put in some more fish.
I do have a couple questions regarding raffi. The filter I have seems almost a tad large for the tank, but I was told it is fine for the size. (Filter is one for up to 20 glns.) Poor raffi seems to be having a hard time with the current and I was wondering if that would stress him out too much as those fish do prefer calm water. The other question is what can I do to slow down the current? The filter doesn't have a flow control, but I figured if I put in some tall plants that would break up the current a bit. I have a pic, just have to see if I can get it up on here. I appreciate any comments or advice. Even though I have done a larger tank before, I still consider myself green to aquariums. Oh and one other thing I am wondering about. I keep reading that you should "break-in" your tank and cycle it. Funny thing is, when I did my first tank way back when, I didn't have it broke in more than a day and I added fish and they were fine! Any thoughts on that?

Re: Hello from Canada!

Welcome to Fishlore Brent.

Well here's what a fellow member did to hers http://www.fishlore.com/Forum/betta-...-action.0.html I have a larger version of your filter I believe and after 3-6 months stuff starts growing in the filter and slows the water down. I'v found that just using filter floss you can slow the water flow down too http://www.fishlore.com/Forum/filter...d.new.html#new I would post most of your questions here for the betta people to answer http://www.fishlore.com/Forum/betta-fish/index.0.html they will gladly help you out.

Thanks for the links. I will post future questions in the appropriate sections. I figured I'd just keep things simple and post my couple Q's in one post so I wouldn't have to go fishing for all the answers!

Re: Hello from Canada!

Don't worry about it really, I just know it will get more attention in the betta section as that's where a lot of betta lovers hang out. It's nice to see you trying to keep things simple.
