Old newbie

Well, I've been visiting your fine forum for the last several days and have decided that I like it. Lots of smart fish folk out here. I've enjoyed putting in my 2 cents in occasionally too. Thank you. I've had fish for as long as I can remember. My daddy got me started on guppies back in the late (cough, cough). Of course I've had just about every other critter that I could buy or catch, too. My ma drew the limit on spiders, though. Fish have always been my favorite. No offence to my dog, Candy. Through a lot of trial and error, and with the help of Mr Axelrod, Innes, and others, I have a thriving family of fish. I still have a metal framed, slate bottom 10 gallon, but it is devoted to a terrarium now. I do have (2) 55 gallon tanks, a 20, (2) 10s, a 5, and several smaller tanks. There is also a 1500 gallon outdoor pond. I keep cardinals, neons, pristellas, guppies, swords, mollies, platys, columbians, black skirts, corys, plecos, chinese algae eaters, koi, and orandas. My husband of 30+ years is very indulgent, and even enjoys my hobby. He plays with model trains, so competition for space sometimes is interesting. I'm not very good with my digital camera, yet, but I've posted some attempts. Well, God love you all! I'll be reading and writing often. Thank you. Guppygranny.

Re: Old newbie

I enjoyed your post. Sounds like you have lots of knowledge that will help folks here at this forum. I am a grandma (no guppies) but enjoy my fish tank tremendously. The house is too small to have many tanks, but I am in the process of planning one that I want to build myself. Currently I have two tanks. A 55 gal. which is overcrowded, and a 10 gal which I originally wanted to have as a hospital tank, but am using it to house a very aggressive chinease algae eater. He started harassing my black ghost knife fish to the point I was afraid the knife fish wasn't comming out to eat enough. So the chase was on.....I won, and now the offender is all by himself!
It has always intrigued me to think of having a pond. What kind of filtration do you have for that? I have subscribed for several years to aquascape Mag. I'd love to install an out door pond/waterfall. Up here in Alaska it would be a problem on our place however because we work off of a generator, and the pumps used to run the waterfall could be a problem with sporadic electrical supply.

Re: Old newbie

Thank you for such a lovely welcome, susitka-flower and Richard! On the problem with an Alaskan pond, I'm not sure of a good answer. Your pond would have to be pretty deep as to not freeze solid, and some sort of opening in the ice would have to be maintained for air exchange. Something rigged with solar panels maybe. Perhaps a hot house rigged around it would protect the fish in the more bitter cold. Summertime would be a wonderful time for a pond there, I think, as koi and goldfish fare better in cooler water. You could always house them inside for the winter. Richard, borrow all the cyber-sugar you like. I'll try to post a photo of the trains, if I can figure out a way to get a fish into it! LOL, Guppygranny
