Hello!

Hi, I have a 10 gallon planted tank with a blue ram, betta, and a pleco. I was wondering what other fish I could add and why one of my plants is dying.

Welcome to Fishlore
Whew!
ok wel, lets start shall we?

I would like to know what kind of pleco you have. Irregardless he needs a larger tank. Some plecos get bigger than 20"!!!
Also, i highly reccomend you move the ram, since he can get vicious and pick on your bettas long flowy fins.

Also, do you know about the nitrogen cycle? if not, here´s a link:

http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

also, we highly reccomend getting an aquarium test kit ( the liquid ones are more reliable)

is there any chance you could get a picture of your aquarium?

Thanks for the info! The betta isnt mine it was my brothers birthday present but it wasnt getting much attention and care so we bought a 10 gallon tank for it along with a blue ram cichild and a swordtail which died after three days. I got a small common pleco(when i got it it had a pink belly) to clean the algae off the plants. I have no problems so far but i like the ram more than the betta so if they do come up I will move the betta to a bowl. Is the pleco fine in the tank for now? I already had pictures before joining fishlore. how do I post them?

when you are replying, you can click the button "Go Advanced"
at the bottom, there is another button that says: Manage attachment. YOu click on it and the rest is pretty much like anyother uploading system lol

The pleco ( the common) needs at least a 75 gallon aquarium. You can look off craigslist and see if someone in your area has a bigger tank for little money. Thats where most members are getting their tanks lately anyway.

As far as the betta, i wouldnt get him a bowl.
Here is our Betta Care Guide:

Important Betta Topics - Read First!

the absolute minimum tank size for a betta is 2.5 gallons. We reccomebd you get the 5 gallon minibow kits. They are very well made, you just need to add a heater.

I would rather return the pleco rather than getting a 75 gallon tank because I lack space. Here are some thttp://www.fishlore.com/fishforum

Welcome to Fish Lore
Good advice from Tony. Unfortunatly, as was said, you have an bad combo of a fish for a 10g.
It would be a good idea to separate the betta and ram before someone gets hurt or killed. Both can be territorial.
They both have great personalities. I bet if you get your betta in a tank (like Tony recommended) you'll see how wonderful they can be. Please don't put him in a bowl.
Or leave him in the 10g because the ram, even though small, should be in a bigger tank as well as the pleco.

Sorry, this seems like a negative post, it's not meant to be. I'm sure you want to give your fish the best and we'd like you to enjoy your fish as much as possible.

Good luck, which ever you decide to do.

Edit: very pretty fish!

Hmmm yes he does look like a very young common

you are being a very responsible owner about taking him back. Good job

You have a very nice Ram it kinda looks like a female to me
as for the betta, i would buy him a separate 5 or 2.5 gallon and keep him in there. They are very very cool and have an awesome personality.

Wow! The people on the pet center let me have the fish. I have no choice but to take the pleco and another fish out. I am having a problem with only one plant I dont know what type of plant it is but it is dying. Will the pleco do good in a larger tank thats not 75 gallons or there any other algae eater I could get? I dont want the fish to be unhappy so what would be a better combo of fish? I want tetras, cichilds, or guppys. Will these be okay?

you can get tetras and guppies but not chichlids they will kill the other fish and you need a bigger tank

Okay I will return the pleco because it will keep growing and then I will have to deal with that. How much Bigger of a tank do I need? What fish can I put in the 10 gal.

I would reccomend a couple guppies

Agreed or a school of maybe 3-4 tetras..... For chiclids the tank size is depending on the species

Cool! Thanks! I like colorful fish I am glad to hear that I wont be spending money on a larger tank, I will try to get a small tank for the betta as soon as I can. How do I prevent algae growth on the plants? I know algae grows because of nitrate levels but how do I lower that?

Water changes lower nitrates......R/O water or maybe a oto or snail.....or a phosphate remover

I will try an oto snail but can it be kept in my tank? I don't know the condition of my water so I will have to take a sample to the fish store.

do you mean ottocinclus or a snail?

either way i reccomend the snail better. I mean dont get me wrong, ottos are cool, but they need an established tank so it would take a while before being able to add them

My tank has been running for a month and I meant the snails to clean the algae. I read in a thread that they are algae eating machines but is that all they eat? I will get guppies and neon tetras mixed. They are cheap but someone recommended feeding my turtles guppies but no way am I doing that.

Good choice. The reason i reccomended them is because with ottos, once they eat up all the algae they wil need you to supplement their diets with algae pellets. Snails however eat all left over flake food at the bottom of the tank

Sorry if my image quality is low on your betta super fishy noob but it appears grainy when I transferred the pic from my dsi to my computer. All my tank photos look like that. I only wish the dsi had a recording feature...I will upload my tank pictures once I have it how I want it. You could have edited your posts instead of posting 4 times SPN It was one of the first features I noticed. I still want to prevent my dying plant from well...dying. Does anyone know the reason why it may be dying? If so, I would appreciate you telling me and giving your tips because plants cost money.

Please dont do Back to back posts. They are hard to follow, takes too much space on the server and confusing. We suggest you use the edit button on the lower right hand corner to add extra info.
Thank you

Super Fish Noob is my friend. I helped him out with his betta and told him about fishlore. Well I honestly forgot what I wanted to do But It would be helpful to know how to use the forum. I tried the links in the PM I got when I joined but It is filled with a whole bunch of other stuff.
