| | Fish Bum | thank you all for your warm welcome, makes me really feel ive made the right choice by coming here
i do have a question tho if anyone could help, me and a mate went down to the river befor for a bit of a fish and i stumbled across some rocks (cool looking rocks) and old dead wood, i collected 2 bits of wood and 4 rocks thinking that it might be possible to throw them in my tank. is it possible to throw these guys in? or have i just collected some firewood and door stops? |

| | Fish Keeper | welcome!
the rocks i would scrub clean, do not use any soap or cleaners, and boil for a little bit. personally, i wouldnt use the wood. |

| | Fish Bum | hmm, my rocks appear to be sandstone i dunno if that means anything, would it break down in my tank and cause issues?
any reason why you wouldnt use the wood? bacteria or something hazardous? |

| | Fish Bum | thanks guys, and i soaked the wood in bleach for a bit then ran hot water across the wood for about 20 mins (my appartment doesnt have a stove but i do have a shower haha).
i started the tank yesterday with my rocks and wood inside, had to anchor the larger peice of wood as it didnt float as well as id prefer, have slight discolouration from it aswell but im monitering my pH closely and i kind of like the look.
im using the fish flakes method to cycle the tank and im getting subtle ammonia readings already, about a .1, so its on its way. |

| | Fish Keeper | Just a thought. Does the wood come from the tidal creeks? If so, coming from a salt water source may be an issue. Not sure whether any amount of boiling would help make it safe for a freshwater tank. Other members with more experience may know better. |

| | Fish Bum | im starting to think this forum is too kind too me, everyones being so nice and actually caring about what im doing, i feel all special and pretty haha.
as for barra, yeh if only i could catch one let alone keep it to put in my tank haha. and yes it does come from tindal area creeks, tho it makes me wonder if u have any military/katherine background.
im planning on gouramis, sicklets (cant find any info on this site and unsure if these fish i see at my local pet store are actully called that) and some rainbow fish, a red tailed shark is also a possibility at this time.
keeping in mind there are certain fish i cant have here, aka cichlids, walking fish |
