Hello, New member here

Hello Everyone,
I am a new member, however I have been pouring for weeks over the wealth of information that all of you wonderful folks have provided for us beginners. I am about 5 weeks into my cycle and my fish are doing well. I cycled with Tetra Safe Start and it has been very stressful waiting for the cycle to complete. I only added the Safe start about 9 days ago. I think I may be almost through the nitrogen cycle. My ammonia levels have been steady at 1.0. 6 days into the cycle I started adding amquell+ and the fish seem to be doing well 3 Zebra Danio's and 2 Cory Cats. 2 of the Danio's seem to be picking on one. I know adding more Danio's is a possible remedy, however I don't dare add any more until I am sure the tank is cycled. I am taking readings for Ammonia and nitrite twice a day. I am not sure if it is wise to use amquell+ with the tetra safe start. I just don't want to poison my fish and would rather prolong the cycle if need be. With the Amquell+ my nitrite levels have been between 0 and .25. I just did a 25% water change today, the first since adding the safe start 8 days ago. I was careful not to disturb the gravel bed.

I have been out of fishkeeping for 30+ years and cannot believe how much has changed. My very first job was working in a local mom and pop tropical fish store after school.

Thanks everyone for all of the valuable info you have given to us newbies. Hopefully someday I will be able to return the favor.

Welcome to Fish Lore.
Try moving some decorations around, sometimes that'll throw the fish off a bit, maybe enough to get them to stop picking on the other one.

We'd love to see pics so post some soon

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am a little upset this morning. One of my cory cats doesn't seem to be doing well. I did a 50% water change and ammonia and nitrite are near 0. The other cory is very close by rallying around him. They have been very close since a put them in the tank. He is alive just not moving much and appears to be sluggish. I am hoping so much for a recovery. I have become very attached to the little guys. I may have started to early with too many fish. I am very sad and upset by my negligence.

welcome to fishlore!!!

im sorry your cory isnt well..what do you use for dechlorinator? if you can find some prime, amquel +, or novaqua+, that will detox the ammonia and nitrites for 24 hours until another water change and keep the lil guys safe..im assuming of course that when you say "near" 0 that it isnt zero...

The little guy seem to be holding his own, he used to go in the shipwreck a lot. He now spends a lot of time in the open. I did put some salt in the tank (mistake) the rep at big box store told me it was "absolutely necessary" for the health of my fish, now I know better. I am removing it through water changes. I have found a nice family run LFS a couple of towns away for my needs. The Nitrites are 0 and ammonia is .50. I am using Prime to keep ammonia from harming my little guys. I also have Stress Coat+ to hopefully replace the salt that I should never have used in the first place. The big box store uses salt it in all of their tanks, it runs through their big filtration system.

Did a 25% water change this morning and added Prime and Stress Coat. I don't have Town Water so no Clorines to remove. I do have Hard water so it needs to be treated from harmful metals. Thanks for the tips.
