HOORAY for FISHLORE!

Yes!!!!! HIP-HIP- HOORAY for Fishlore!!!! I am kinda new here...(one prior post)..thankfully found you guys sometime in December. I am a product of MTS. ( 5 tanks since November)... Everybody is doing great..thanks to ALL OF YOU!!!!
I have been in here EVERY day reading, reading and reading I have learned soooooooooooooo much....Everyone on Fishlore has helped me without even knowing it!!!! I really want everyone to know how thanful I am for everyone sharing their knowledge and expertease.
My daughter started this whole thing with wanting an aquarium in her room.We are Major pet people so of course I said why not?(I am owned by 11 parrots,12 dogs,3 cats)..well of course she didnt start out simple....it was dwarf puffers or nothing...so away we went...knowing next to nothing(but this tank has never had any issues..thankfully)....once that tank was set-up my husband enjoyed it so much we had to have one in our room...one LED to two and so on and so on...lol...lol..I know all of you know what I mean
Well long story short I was lucky enough to aquire a 55 gallon (always wanted a BIG one with BR Parrots) well away I went.Tank all done just how I wanted it...everything going well I fineally had my Parrots I added a few Austraillian Rainbows and I have had so much enjoyment with it
Well then it HAPPENED!!!!..I was in here just watching my fish...when I spotted those DREADFUL little spots..You all know the ones I mean...My beautiful babies had ICH!!!!!!!
The first thing I did...was to hit the computer and get on Fishlore...I was all over this place...I was able to go back and do more reading,reading,reading..
I did do some searching elsewhere( I wont say where...lol) but just so EVERYONE knows with all the reading I did FISHLORE people had the very best advice and help offered
I decided to be very aggressive in treatment bcause within 3 days of so it was everywhere,I decided to do a combination of things and I guess it did the trick!!!! I did raise the water temp (slowly) to about 86, removed carbon, added salt,Kordon Ick-Attack(followed mfg directions and its natural),used Seachems Metronidazole and Focus with their Garlic Guard on food......and TAD-DA!!!!! the ICH dissappeared within a couple of days!!!!!! I did continue treating my babies for about 5 days after there were no signs of those little buggers just to be safe and ALL of my babies look heathier, and happier, then they did b4 any of this...no losses and all is well...I really believe this is becasue of all the reading I was able to do in Fishlore..like I said ALL of YOU helped me without even knowing it....Please keep up the Great work !!!!!!

I Thank-You and my Babies thank You!!!!

lorabell
p.s.... I hope that no-one thinks I overdid it...I really just wanted my fish better...and it worked for me...thanks again

hi and welcome if i haven't welcomed you before!

i'm glad your babies are feeling better, the only thing that i would say as far as treatment would be that you may not want to mix different medications that aren't designed to work together (for example, it's perfectly okay to treat bacterial infections with maracyn as well as maracyn 2, they're designed to work together) as it may be pretty stressful on your fish.

other than that, all i'd add is that you may want to add an air stone or bubble wand if you haven't already, as medications as well as raised temperatures will have severely depleted the oxygen levels in the tank, and you'll want to do very thorough gravel vacuums to get up as many of the ich spores as you can so you don't get another outbreak! keep a close eye on your babies for at least the next couple of weeks, as the ich life cycle is about two weeks.

Agreed! Hooray for Fish Lore! One complaint - you all are enablers and bad influences on me. I never intended to have more than one tank. I still only have 2, but I've found myself wandering around the house looking for a good place to put a 3rd. My husband is ready to divorce me, I think. LOL.

Who us? Enablers? Never! lol

My husband is (was) the same way. The more he understands fish and their compatibility or incompatibility the better he's getting.

I have a 30, 2 10's, 2 5's and another 30 sitting in my living room waiting for a hood and filter.
Oh and my daughter has a 10g in her room.

My husband just doesn't get it. He keeps suggesting I put a FW trout in the big tank so he can cook it up and eat it (who cares that my cories probably would not appreciate a trout). Yes, he thinks he's funny, despite my protesting that he's not. He thinks the 2 cats (actual cats, not cory-cats, lol) and the dog are enough. Never enough! Anyone else wish they could take their fish out and cuddle them? Maybe it's just crazy me.

At first I though my wife would take my MTS in a not so good way. Truth is... it's been the opposite!

She is the one to blame for suggesting me using a never-used-before garden hose so I stop spilling water around with the 5gal buckets in water change... all the way to naming the just arrived female sub-adult Tiger Oscar as "Flor" (Flower in English).

She does let me take care of the tanks and offers help when she figures I would take it (she knows I wouldn't let anyone mess with our fishies). On her last work-related trip she brought me a protein skimmer (in my low-end brackish tank) and a very useful Hagen tool (long pliers and scissors).

I believe the MTS bug is within us; Fishlore is a definite influence in letting it roll.

What a nice post Glad you found all the information helpful. I've been a fish keeper for years and I still learn more and more every day from being on this site. By the way, would love to see some pictures of your tanks if possible (especially the Bloody Parrots, my favorite) I have pictures of mine in my profile if you want to take a look. Good luck and keep up the good work. Nice to hear they are all doing well.

To Everyone....again much thanks!!!!! sorry I didnt write it.....believe it or not..I WAS trying to keep it short....lol...but I did do all of those things( lots of extra air, even lowered the water line for even more aration from my filter ..that was a suggestion by someone way back),water changes,...all of it I promise ...lol...I do believe the worst thing I did do was to mix meds....I also contacted seachem by phone....Thats how I found out about putting it on their food...well we are about 4 1/2 weeks into it start to
finish.....Im gonna brave it and do water change (a little bigger) today and return the carbon...everybody really looks great................ AGAIN THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!!!

Wow! Do you have them all right now or is it what you had during your life time? Anyways welcome to fishlore. Everyone enjoys what they learn here and how surprising it is from all the information. If I didn't find this site my fishes would die in a day.

I was hit with MTS as well ... I would NOT have been able to do it properly without FL ... I'm really glad to hear that it worked out for you ... I'm always so paranoid about disease in my tanks ... I'm sure I peek in 100 times a day to do a head count and watch for sick fishes ...

If it was not for these kind folks at FL, I KNOW that I would have made mistakes and followed horrible advice from a few LFSs ...

Lucy's cat in the tank always makes me snicker ...

It is now time for my Sunday morning coffee and a PWC for the 55 gal ... take care everyone!
