| Hello! My first post on Fishlore! Hi! I'm new to fishlore, and I've got to say, looking up information on how to properly take care of fish is DAUNTING. The more information I look up, the more confused I am. Every person seems to have different information, even when it comes to appropriate temperature! But that's not what I wanted to ask.
I was wondering - last year I was at the LFS and there was an orange betta. And I don't mean lighter shade of red, but orange sherbert colored! I was shocked. And while I wanted to take him home, I didn't have any room (as I already had a (and still have the same) male betta). A week later, because I had that fish on my mind, I wanted to see if he was still there. Of course, he wasn't. But then there was a YELLOW betta! Are these colors normal in bettas or somehow artificially achieved? Does anyone know? Thanks! |

| Welcome to fishlore! I don't think orange and yellow are natural colors...However for the yellow, it could depend. Are you talking about a straight out yellow? Or more like a goldish-brown yellow? I think bettas can be golden colored, but I don't think they can be yellow. |

| Welcome to Fish Lore
Seems lately I've seen quite a few oranges in the stores. I've seen yellow also and they're normal colors. |

| It was pretty straight out yellow, but not as shocking as the orange one - a little lighter yellow than the orange was orange. If they are in fact normal colors, I think I might want to try and find one some time! The orange one still haunts me as the one that got away! Thanks, guys! |

The best thing is gather as much info as possible and try to make the best decision you can and what's in the best interest of the fish.
Where have you seen the yellows? |

| Oh, yes, the nitrogen cycle. I know bits and pieces, but need to read up on the whole process in it's entirety. Thanks. I know I still have so much to learn, but I'm willing to do what I can for my fish.
And so many beautiful bettas out there! I guess I shouldn't be so surprised - I have a female betta who's a lilac color. It's just that fact that he was JUST LIKE ORANGE SHERBERT surprised me.
Thank you all for your responses! I just have one more question. I recently brought home what I thought was an otocinclus, but once I got home and got a closer look at it, I think they might have given me an algae eater by mistake. I have one gold chinese algae eater and another otocinclus, so I think I have means to compare (but for the color), but I'm not so sure. How do you tell the difference? The last thing I need is to have another algae eater, especially since I had no idea what I had gotten into when I bought the first one! |

| I just realized I was asked a question about the yellow one. There is a Pet Club near my house, and they had the yellow one, as well as the orange one. They haven't had any strikingly colored betta's since that I've seen, though.
Oh, and ANOTHER thing!! I went to an aquarium store today, and this just adds to my gripes about fish owning - I try to gently point out that the betta tanks they sell for bettas are WAY too small, and I ALWAYS get the response from the seller that bettas do "really well in small spaces" or "a betta can do JUST FINE in a small tank" or "I keep my betta in a tank like that!". It's just frustrating to think of my betta at home nestling into a hiding spot and how other bettas are forced to be on display in a tank they can barely move in for the rest of their lives. |
