Hello, I am new to Fishlore. I am looking forward to my tank completing the "cycling" process so I can get some fish! I am interested in getting Gouramis but I need advice on which kinds are compatable. On the internet I read most are semi aggressive but at the 2 major LFS they have them listed as peaceful community fish.

Hi Welcome to Fish Lore

Congrats on the fish less cyle.
I don't know about Gouramis but our members have a wide range of knowledge and experience so someone will be able to answer your questions.

Good luck with your tank and be sure to post some pics.

Not sure where you read that gouramis are aggressive but that doesn’t really matter. My Honey gouramis are living very peacefully with my neons. You should avoid other fish that will challenge for the top of the tank but they are a community fish. Some gouramis can get fairly large and are best suited with other larger fish.

Here is a good link that shows different types of gouramis and info on each of them.

Hello and welcome to fishlore
There are different types of Gourami's that are available. The largest are the blue or the gold Gourami. I never found them aggressive in my tank. The Dwarf Gourami is more colorful and usually you only find the males available at the LFS. They for some reason seem to be more aggressive towards each other, I also had them before and they chased each other around all the time.I also would advise against getting any Angelfish if you choose to keep Gourami's.
I have also had the 'honey' Gourami which is the smallest species of Gourami and much more peaceful in a community tank and I never had any problems with them.

Thank you for your responses. I don't know what website I read about the semi aggressive types of Gouramis (maybe I was dreaming!) But I had myself so convinced I went and bought a 20 gallon tank for community fish (Tetras, ect.) and was planning on making the 55 gallon semi aggressive. I guess I willl be rethinking that! I have plenty of time to continue researching fish. Thanks again

Welcome, With some gouramis particularly the dwarf types they are semi-aggressive with each other rather than at other fish.

from my knowledge gouramis are very peaceful with most if not ALL other fish..........except for other males of the same species. IMO just ONE male gourami in a tank, or one male and 2-3 females is the only way to go. and i'm pretty sure the pearl gourami and the moonlight gourami are the most peaceful.

My male DG is quite aggressive. I had 2 in a 55 gal. and he killed the other one & he constantly picks on my BR parrots. But maybe it's just mine.

Honey gouramis aren't aggressive. And yes, I think they mainly dislike each other, so they wouldn't work out in a semi aggressive tank. I think just one honey or dwarf would work in your community. I have honey gouramis, I love them. Good luck!
