Swimming with the sharks...

Ok, so I found this website by accident while trying to research and find information on how to care for my new fish (I just bought them this afternoon). I have a bala shark, a rainbow shark, and a red tail shark...but nothing else so far. The rainbow and redtail shark seems to be infatuated with eachother...constantly following eachother around. The bala seems to be more much more independent. What advice can help me out? Are these fish likely to grow too big for my 30 gallon tank? Should I add something else to curb bad behavior? Any and all advice is much appreciated

Welcome to Fish Lore. We're glad you found us.

I don't know much about sharks, but according to their profile the rainbow and bala should have a 55g. I'm not sure about their compatibility.

Since your tank is brand new it would be a good idea to get good test kit (a liquid kit such as the API master kit is highly recommended) and read up on the nitrogen cycle. Here's the link:
Nitrogen Cycle

Here's a basic explanation of the nitrogen cycle:
First your ammonia (from fish waste and left over food) will rise.
In a few weeks you'll see the nitrite levels rise and the ammonia levels start to drop.
After a few more weeks you'll see the nitrate levels rise and the nitrite levels drop.
Ammonia and nitrites are toxic to your fish.
So until your cycle is complete, you need to keep the levels down with daily water changes
When you having readings of 0 on both ammonia and nitrites with some nitrates showing, your cycle is done.
Use Prime or Stress Coat+ as your water conditioner. They'll detox the ammonia and make it safer for your fish but still make it available to the beneficial bacteria.

Our members have a wide range of knowledge and I'm sure someone can help with more info about your sharks.

Good luck

welcome to fishlore!!

a rts and a rainbow will end up with one severely injured or killed in a 30 gal together
they are super territorial and only 1 is recommended..the bala is more submissive and wouldnt hurt anything...unless he can fit them in his mouth ...he likes to eat small fishies...he will as lucy said out grow that tank and they also like to school....
