Hello!

Just like to say a big hello to fishlore!
I just signed up.
I only just started getting into fish and currently only have a 5 gallon tank with a Male betta in it, hes lovely!
I'm going to go and get a nice 40 Gallon next week and I was wondering...
what kind of fish should I get for it? What are your favorites?

Welcome to FishLore

We'd love to see your betta. 5g's! What a nice home.

Good luck with your 40g. There's so many choice's. Luckily you'll have plenty of time to decide while your tank is cycling.

Thanks! I wanted to give him a somewhat large home since they look so depressed in those tiny bowls from the petshops. I'll post some photos eventually.

How long does cycling take for a 40 gallon? about a week?

I was thinking about what to put in the 40 gallon, what about these?

Black widow tetrasx5
Danios x4
Guppiesx4
Dwarf gouramisx2
Corysx4

too much?

Sorry for the stupid questions lol :P

heres a great link for you to read http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

depending on what method you use, it can take many weeks

I didn't see any stupid questions. If you're not sure about something it's always best to ask.
As far as your stocking list, it wouldn't overstock your tank. Although I have heard about Dwarf's becoming territorial. Perhaps someone who keeps them can comment on that.

The length of time it takes to cycle depends on the method.
Possibly a week (give or take) if you use TetraSafe Start or used filter media.
Fishless cycling using some source of ammonia (fish food, ammonia with no additives) can take up to a month (give or take).
What method are you considering?

I'm going to use safe start, I'm not sure what filter media is.
Also thanks for the link Shawnie!
I have some Java fern, should I put that in before or after the tank has cycled?

I'm still taking suggestions as to what kinds of fish to put in my tank.

Filter media is the stuff inside the filter. Sponge, carbon etc. As for fish, maybe go down to one gourami, and add an angelfish? Or you could do 2 honey gouramis, they're completely un-aggressive and really pretty.

I'd never seen a honey gourami before and just looked it up and wow! what a pretty fish!
I'm going to go with the honey gouramis!

And maybe you'd like some sort of algae eater, like a small species of pleco (not common!!!) or some otos. But they're not absolutely necessary. Just make sure not to overstock.

And by the way, welcome to fishlore!

I'll make sure my little fishes aren't cramped.
And yes those algae eaters are very fun, I may have to get a little one!

I've decided to wait a little while before I get a 40 gallon, times are hard and I want to be able to afford to give my fishes the best so I'm going to wait until I have some spare money :P

For now I will stick with my Beautiful Betta and I'm about to post some picks of him in the photo thread, so until then I am very much loving this site and thank you for the warm welcome.
