Doing my research!

Hi everyone!
My name is Nate and I am new to the hobby. I have recently started cycling my 20 gln tall tank. I have a Marineland power filter and an undergravel filter as well. The cycling is going slow ( I am using fish food...I know, messy!) I am being patient and doing my research for fish that will suit my experience, level of care, and tastes (nope I am not going to eat them!)
I will be doing a community tank with Corys and some schooling fish (possibly tetras maybe platys..?? Wow...I really am not sure yet!!! I am definately open to suggestions for number of fish and types. Mainly I want a peaceful community. Ideas??
I do alot of research whenever I undertake a project and I was very lucky to stumble on this site early in the process. All of you regulars have made this an easy process so far. THANKS A BUNCH!
I look forward to chatting with all of you in the future...PS...pics will be coming I promise!!

Welcome to Fishlore!
Congratulations on doing the research, and on going with a fishless cycle. It's slow going to begin with, but you end up with much more enjoyable tanks in the long run.

Welcome to Fishlore Nathan
Awesome job doing your research. What kind of tetras were you thinking about??. I think Corys are a great addition to a community tank. Are you looking at a specific kind of Cory?

Thanks for the warm welcome!
I have one consideration with the Corys that is bothering me. The substrait is larger rounded rock which should be ok right? Then I have some caves I made out of shale which may be a problem for them. What are your thoughts? Are there other bottom dwellers that might enjoy that set up a little more? I really like the way the shale looks and I dont really want to get rid of it!
Maybe a pic will help I will try to get one up for everyone after work today.

PS should I move the question to the set up forum before I post?

I believe you are right about the corydoras long term health (barbel wise) and irregular shapes that is carachteristical of shale rocks. Maybe they are safe but I don't know. So more research to do for me too!

It takes longer to cycle with fish, you are going to end up with a pretty stable tank (cycle wise) and it's worth the wait. Besides, I have learned here that planning is another enjoyable part of fishkeeping.

Welcome and make yourself at home.
