The new guy!

I just wanted to say hi to everyone...Im looking forward to meeting some friendly people who can help me in my sons and my new adventure...We have a 10 gal freshwater tank wich is cycling...I have been checking out fishlore.com finding out info on fish and deciding what will go good in our tank...I have a plan but i think it is going to ba a little much for a ten gallon tank...I was thinking 6 cherry barbs,6 tetras(neon or cardinal),4 apple snails(2 black and 2 gold) and maybe if all goes well some algie eaters...Is that to much or managable with good maintenance?Any help would be wonderful...

Hi Welcome to Fish Lore

What a great experience for you and your sons to share a wonderful hobby like this.

Unfortunatly, your stocking plans would overstock your tank. You could do 6 cherry barbs or 6 neons or 6 cardinals.
I don't know a lot about snails but I've read they carry a big bio load, so see what others say about them.

I have a 10g also and had visions of all these fish I could have. Then I started doing research and thought what about all the fish I wanted! lol
I see a larger tank in your future.

Good luck and enjoy the forum

Hi and welcome to fishlore!
Great to see your doing the reseach before getting the fish.
Your off to a good start with cycling the tank first, which method are you using to cycle the tank?
Think you would need a 20g tank for the fish you have listed
I was overstocked when I had 3 Guppies & 3 Neons in a 8g, so you may need to rethink the stocking.... maybe 2+2 and the snails.
Sure someone will post the knows more on fresh water stocking than me ( love our salt water )
Hope you enjoy the site and best of luck!
Pete

Edit. still to slow with my typing LOL

Hi lucy, shawnie and peterpiper...its nice to meet you guys...
Since you asked peterpiper, I am cycling my tank using stability by seachem...i got it at petsmart...it says on the back you can add plants and fish at anytime but im giving it a week...im also using API's stress zyme+ at the same time...Its nice and clear and my water tests are coming out ok...

I like you tank lucy, what type of tetras are in it?..i noticed two types...how many do you have?..i read that its best to keep them in schools of 5 or 6 to keep them happy...can they be a mixed school?..I would like to end up with some variety if possible...thats why i was going with 6 of the barbs and tetras to follow what i read about schooling...

Thanks, I started out with 4 short finned serpaes and 4 neons.
A few months after those pics were taken, I lost 2 neons. I had tried to add a couple more but the remaining 2 neons would never accept anymore. They would harass and fin nip any neons I tried to add.
I recently lost the 2 remaining neons after they lived happily for close to a year.
Now I have the original 4 serpea a lone oto (the survivor of 3) and a few ghost shrimp.

You're right, schooling fish normally prefer and feel safer in groups of 6. My stocking was a newbie mistake, but for some reason it worked for me.

I've read that if the fish are about the same size and shape, they'll school together.
