New to Fish Lore Forum. Not new to Fish.

Hello Everyone,

My Bio is extensive, some say interesting, I'll keep the intro short.

I've been into aquariums for 62 years. Since the first one was when I was 9, that makes me 71 years young, although some joints and muscles would argue that statement.

From 1946 to 1966 I was exclusively FW. After a wedding in 1959 I expanded from two small tanks to a basement that soon swelled to 24 aquariums ranging in size from a few 10 gal, several 55 gal and a monster for the time an 80 gal, all FW. In 1966 I got bit by the SW bug and set up my first, a 30 long. In a month everything was dead. Has anyone told you that the SW cycle is more important and more deadly than it's FW counter part? That's what I learned the first month.

By 1968 I was doing so well in SW, I began installing and maintaining them around my hometown, Madison, WI. I earned the moniker, "The Fish Man". I began selling off my FW and by 1972, I was strictly SW with 18 aquariums in my basement. Since 1968, I've been in the "business" in one fashion or another, even to this day.

From 1963 to 2001 I also held a "real" job. a pipefitter/welder. I retired in June 2001 and began looking for property in FL for retirement and to begin the final phase of my life long love of everything aquarium, our aquaculture facility. We moved into our "dream" home (we designed it) in FL in Sept 2005.

Our aquaculture facility was originally going to be a large greenhouse (36' x 40') but, in 2004 as our house was being finished, the hurricanes blew through and our plans took an abrupt turn. Three aquaculturing friends I'd met in FL had their greenhouses destroyed, flattened, complete destruction. One quite the business, two rebuilt but it took them two years to get production up so they could begin selling in enough volume to make any significant income. I figured, I'm too old to go through that. So...

We scaled back our plans and now have a building...

That we think will withstand the hurricanes. We have scaled back the volume of SW water for the aquaculture, too. We will have about 1200 gals to begin and see where we go from there. After all, I am 71 and retired.

Right now, I have a 135 gal mixed reef chuck full of coral frags, fish, RBTA, and inverts. Here is a pic of it...

Click the image to open in full size.

It utilizes the DSB in the DT plus a DSB in the sump/refugium, 1000 GPH Little Giant pump for circulation through the DT and Top Fathom skimmer, Lifeguard 25 watt UV, plus 2 Koralia #4s for extra circulation. I've used PFO's Solaris LED system since it's inception in Sept of 2006, purchasing each new model as they upgraded. The Picture above is with the latest, and greatest, I5 model. It's been up and running since February 2006 so, nearly three years.

Like all new systems it's had it's ups and downs. There is a build thread on another forum that is the most visited thread on that forum. It has 23,000 plus hits and over 600 posts. It is a daunting read BUT, I have been told many times by my peers, everyone should read it. I am humbled by the response. Not sure if I can post a link to it here or not. I guess if you would like to read it, you'll have to PM me. Or, if it is OK to link to it, a Mod will have to chime in and let me know.

Just think, this is the SHORT version of my introduction.

Hi Dick welcome to Fish Lore

I really enjoyed your intro. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.
Your tank is gorgeous. I'm with Shawnie, I'll enjoy everyones pics of SW. lol

Not sure about the link to the other forum. It's usually considered good relations to provide a link back. Here are the FishLore Forum Rules that pertain to links.

Enjoy the forum.

nemo addict, thank you for the welcome and the tank comment.

TropicalGrimmish, thanks for the welcome, I'm sure I'll love it here. It's all about fish, isn't it?

Shawnie, thanks for the welcome. It is kind of an amazing story. My Dad fought me on the idea for a year (about. who can remember that far back?) and on my 9th BD he came home with a Gold Fish and a 2 1/2 gal pressed glass bowl. I was ecstatic! The rest is history.

steveangela1, Thank you! I'm here to help in any way I can. I am very busy so, e-mail me if I haven't been on and you, or anyone, needs to contact me. About your Nano, It's very common for them to cause trouble, especially for beginners. I'm assuming you are in that category, of course. I can help.

Lucy, thank you! I read the rules and they are a bit confusing because it states no links to other "competing" forums, yet, someone sent me here, from another forum, with the thought that I might be able to help in the SW department. Plus you have a link share program.

I'm willing to spend time here but, I can't re-write some of my articles and thread posts when I have them either on another forum or on my web site. It's too time consuming. I easily spend an hour or more writing an answer to one question because the answer has to be accurate, spell corrected,
punctually correct, too. I hate it when a question is posted and some "expert" gives a one sentence answer. Very few questions can be answered that way. Besides, I'm a talker, can you tell?

So, what I've done is placed a big Fish Lore Forum banner on my web site here - The Cultured Reef Forum Links Page

Hopefully that will ease the problem with the Mod gods. If not they can let me know and I will cease and desist.

I have several great articles that explain away some of the myths and problems as they relate to beginners of SW aquariums.

Welcome to fishlore! It'll be great to have you around

As you may recall I'm slowly bringing my puffers up to SW salinity, and I'm excited to learn all about SW. My first tank was brackish, so at least I've got the salt part down

Hello Dick and welcome to fishlore.
I am sure that you have a wealth of information to share with other saltys here and I bet they will appreciate your experience.
I also love salt water tanks. There is nothing like them, but I am one of the intimidated folks who are afraid to try it. So I also sit back and enjoy the photos of the SW tanks and can appreciate the hard work it takes to keep them running.
Thank you for posting the banner and link on your website. I am pretty sure its ok, but Mike our Administrator will let you know if there is a problem with any link.Since you are the creator of the articles, I dont see any infringement or copyright problems. But again, Mike will let you know.
Please post more photos of your SW tanks and fish...
SW fish are about the most amazing and colorful patterned fish there can possibly be, and I am in awe of their beauty.
Best of luck and hope that the weather in Florida will cooperate with your endeavor.

Hi and welcome!
Pipefitter welder? I did my time as a boilermaker welder, then went to pipefitting, now supervising.
Loved to intro, and you tank.
Just a quick Q... What is the flow rate on your 25w UV?

Welcome to Fishlore. I'm sure your expertise will be helpful to all.
That is some building you've put up. Looks like your fish will be safe from those hurricanes.

Hi Dick and welcome to Fishlore! Sounds like you have a ton of experience and congrats on doing what you enjoy in your retirement.

I don't mind at all having helpful links on the forum. After all that is what our forum is all about, learning and sharing info. We have links to other websites all over in here. The only time I have a problem with outgoing links is when a webmaster for another website or forum just wants to place links to their site(s) but not add a link back to FishLore in return. Looking forward to reading your posts!

Added your link here too: http://www.fishlore.com/LinksPage-Saltwater.htm

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome to fishlore!

You seem to be a great fishkeeper from whom we will love to learn. I plan to stay FW for at least two more years. I need to learn so much yet to go into SW.

We love pics here, so thanks for posting this one. We expect you post more, of course.
