Fish Keeper

Hi! I am new to this forum, but not new to fishkeeping.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, so I am giving a little info about my tanks.

I started fishkeeping when my boyfriend's dad was about to flush some feeders. He made a little Christmas village with a pond in the middle, and thought it would be cute to have some small fish in the pond. When it was time to take the village down, he was going to flush the 6 surviving (out of 10) feeder goldfish. I told him that I would take them if he didn't want them, because I couldn't bear the thought of that type of death. So I took the six of them home in a small jar and bought a 1 gallon tank, then about a week later a 5, then a couple months later a 10, then a few more months later (maybe close to a year) a 75 gallon tank with the stand and 2 penguin filters, etc. It has now been over 10 years. I have 3 originals left and 3 of their babies in that same 75 gallon tank. They have great personality and are just wonderful fish.
Inspired by these fish and by being on other forums, I started a tropical, planted tank in a 20 gal. long a few years back. I am partial to Kerry Tetras, so I had some of them, some German blue Rams, some Sparkling Gouramies, some Platies, and a few Peppered Cories. When I added some Khuli Loaches, they wiped out everything except the Platies. Now, I have a runaway population of Platies in that tank and nothing else (except snails).

But, I added a Clown Pleco today with the intention of adding him to my Comet tank. Now I am starting to second guess that idea. But I need something to eat the algae in that tank. We will see. I will be posting soon to ask for some ideas in that area.

So, that is my intro, and believe it or not, that is the short version!

Welcome to fishlore!

I can't believe that kuhlis wiped out everything in your tank! They are supposed to be pretty peaceful. Clown plecos are great little algae eaters and do very well in planted tanks. Did you add him to your 20 gallon or 75 gallon? Please post some pics of your tanks when you get a chance. We would love to see them

Thank you all for the warm welcome.
I will get pics up as soon as I find them on my computer. They are older pictures, and I did some moving files on my computer. Should I post them in this thread, or is there a way to put them on my profile?

As far as the Khuli Loaches go, they were sick. I didn't quarentine as long as I should have, and that did it. When I went back to the fish store, their whole stock of Khulis was dying. They gave me my money back for them but that was it. I later found out that the Khulis were just bad that year. Nobody was selling them after that first scare. It has been 3 years and I am now starting to see them again.

You can put your pictures here so everyone can enjoy them:
http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/members-fish-tanks/

You can also add them to your profile but only people visiting your profile would see them.

I'm looking foward to seeing them.

Thank you, Lucy.

The pics are in.

Butterfly, yes, the Plecos that have been recommended to me prefer colder water like the Comets do. From what I have learned about Plecos so far, they are pretty good tankmates with Comets as long as I keep the Pleco well fed, otherwise, they will try to suck on the Comets' slime coat. On the other hand, both Goldies and Plecos are "poop machines" so the tank will have to be cleaned very often. I already do 50% waterchanges every week on my Comet tank.

Darlene, that is the short version too. Maybe someday I will do the whole story, but I don't want to ruin it with too many details. I have a tendency to do that sometimes.
