That's b/c betta should be kept alone in 3-10g tank with heat and low flow filter.
You have too many fish in your 29g. Never put two betta in the same tank they will stress each other to death.
The neons, 1 algae eater the guppies & gouramis can be in your 29g add 6 more neons and take out the rest of the fish. Bala sharks need to be in large tanks.
What you are doing wrong is put fish that aren't compatible together in a small tank.

Hi deobn, Welcome to Fish Lore

I agree with Shawnie. It's always best to look up the compatabilty and recommended tank size for the fish you want.

Is your tank cycled? Meaning, are your tests showing 0 for ammonia, 0 for nitrites with nitrates between 5-10?

The ladies are correct that the fish compatability is a huge issue with your tank.

(Good job ladies! )

Bala sharks get large enough to need a 75-100g tank by the time they are adults.
Bettas should be observed for temperment if attempting a community setting.
Betta Splendens (specific species of betta that 99% of the pet stores/fish stores carry) should not be kept together in 99.999%$ tanks unless it is females that were raised in the same tank, and even then should be watched for temperment.

Again, the ladies have this covered so I am adding a back-up statement to echo what they've said.

Welcome to Fishlore.
Agreed with the above statements and adding this:
Bettas almost always do badly with other labyrinth fish (like dwarf gourami). I have, to this date, only heard of one betta living with another labyrinth fish and doing okay. Usually, they get very territorial and try to tear each other apart.

Welcome to Fishlore.

The tank is overstocked and those fish don't make good tankmates for a betta. Bettas are best kept in a tank of 5 gal. or more by themselves.
