Hello from the land of lakes

Hello all,

This site has been great. I recently bought a used 10 gallon tank that came with everything but the water to start my own aquarium. It still does not have fish in it as i'm waiting for the nitrogen cycle to take effect but soon it will be home to about 6 small fish.

If all goes well I will look into upgrading to a larger tank size come spring. The only debate being how big I will go, I am unsure if I should just leap into something like a 70 gallon tank right after a successful run at a 10 gallon or if I should step up to a 40 gallon and then up to a 70 gallon later.

Anyway, looks like a great community here and I hope to be able to avoid making newbie mistakes with my first batch of tropical fish.

Also, some really cool smileys here.

welcome to fishlore!! I would reccomend go as big as you can..its easier to keep water parimeters correct and curbs your MTS for a longer period of time for some of us anyway!! LOL goodluck and get us pics if you can!

Welcome to Fishlore from a (presumed) fellow Minnesotan.
I agree with Shawnie. Up to a certain point, bigger is better for new people. There's more room for the fish to survive any errors that may occur. In my opinion, 10g tanks are among the hardest to keep, because of how difficult it is to keep the parameters stable.

Yep, I would be a fellow minnesotan.

I actually picked up the fish last night at the local Petco. They didn't have any Tiger Barbs, which I was unsure of getting after reading about them being nippers, so I picked up 4 black skirt tetras instead. I got the smallest bala shark they had, which is about 2 inches long. They were also out of the bamboo shrimp I wanted to pick up 1 of, I'll drop in to their store in a couple weeks to look again.

Thanks for the advice on tanks.

Welcome, and Congrats on the new tank. I would go for a bigger tank also when you get a new one. We started with a 5, and about two weeks later got a 20 and are only waiting to get a big one until we move.

Sad news. My little bala shark already died 3 days into it. The water levels were all perfect so I can only guess it was the tetra that was chasing everyone else around stressed him out and killed him.
