Stillborn Guppy Fry
I recently bought a female wild type guppy from Wal-Mart. I have had her for about 2 months. At first I didn't know what type of fish she was, since she was in a Rosy Red fishtank. Around a month ago, I noticed that she was very fat, and since I didn't know that she was a guppy and I didn't know guppy breeding habbits, I assumed that she couldn't be pregnant since there was no male in the tank. Well, about a week ago, I found out that she was a guppy, and that she was pregnant, so I set up a small birthing tank with a heater in it and moved her into it about 4 days ago. I kept her in there for 24-36 hours, and when she didn't have her babies, I moved her bacl into the main tank. Yesterday I noticed that she was looking very fat and squared off, so I moved her back into the smaller tank. Today she gave birth to 15-20 stillborn fry. They didn't appear to be premature. They were all about the size of a grain of rice. One thing I did notice is that most of them were curled up in a little ball, making it look like they didn't have a tail. Some of the ones that weren't curled up looked like they had a deformed spine or something, because their tails were crooked. I am wondering why they were all stillborn. Was it something genetic, since some had defirmed looking spines? Or was it something else?
