I found my Angel Fish at the bottom of the tank on its side

I have a Marble angel fish, the body is the size of the palm of my hand, this morning i put the tank light on to find the angel lying on its side at the bottom of the tank, as soon as i lifted the lid to feed the fish he swam to the top to eat the food. He has been swimming around ever since, being as dominant as he always is to the other fish, I have never seen him do this before. I immediatly did a water change just in case. Can anyone tell me if this is common with angel fish.

No, I always alternate with flake for the top feeders and wafers for the bottom feeders one day and the next day I feed blood worm for all of them, yesterday i fed flake and wafers, the angel was lying on the bottom this morning before I fed them blood worm, but as soon as I put the worms in he came straight for it, and has been swimming around ever since.

No I didn't do a test before I changed the water, but I did one after and it was fine, I always do a 40% water change every week and always have done, rarely do I have a problem with the water.

Hi Welcome to Fish Lore

When you say the water tested fine, what were the readings for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates? What are you using to test? How many gallons is your tank?

I'm not sure testing the water immediately after a water change will give you an accurate look at what the water was prior to the change or what it will be in 12 or so hours.

Have you added any new fish recently?

I don't think it's normal for any fish to lie on it's side unless something is going on.

Good luck, I hope he'll be ok, let us know.

I had 2 angels that did this and it was a siwm bladder issue. I was never able to cure it and lost both of them within 2 weeks after they started doing this.

Welcome to Fishlore.. I'm not sure what would cause your angel to behave like that, since he sounds find now.

HI thank you for your reply.
I only tested for Nitrate and it read 0.5 by my kit (Nutrafin) the ph was normal.
No I have'nt added any fish recently. As far as fish lying on there side, clown loaches do it all the time, but I was'nt aware of any other fish doing it.
I have a 70 ltr tank the bay window type with two types of filters and a heater which sits around 28c.
I have just fed the fish and he is swimming and eating like he normally does, its beyond me. I will go to an aquarium shop today to have the water tested thoroughly.
thanks again

My blackskirt tetra does that when she's stressed out.

When i first got her from the LFS, when she was in the bag she was lying on her side.
Never did it after that.
If i take out all the fish to rearrage decor or do some vaccuming ( i have smalll fish )
she'll do it too.

Never any other time though.

Hi Thanks for your reply, it only happened yesterday morning and he has been fine ever since, today I took a water sample to the local aquarium shop for them to test the water they tested for everything and it was fine all the levels were OK. I asked if he had seen this happen before because he breads Angels, he said nothing surprises him, they can be quite skitish, and he could have got spooked, being as he is eating and acting normal including bossing the other fish around, it must of been one of those things. So keeping fingers cross he will be Ok. thanks

Hi, Just an update on my Angel fish, it has now been 3 weeks since he was lying on the bottom of the tank, he has been ok ever since, he must of felt a little lazy that morning. Anyway thank you for your response.
