| New From Ireland :-) Hi im a newbie , just have one question, i have approx. a 6gallon tank witht he following fish in it:
2 guppys (1m,1f)
2 palys
2 glowlites
2 blue neon
1 penguin
1 giant danio
1 black mollie (f)
Is this too much fish in a 6 gallon tank? the fish seem fine they all look to have plenty of room, i have plenty of plants and cover in the tank only prob ive encountered so far is that the female black mollie tends to have a go for the female guppy, would puttin a male molie in with the female help this?
Any help much appreciated. Thanks Sinead. |

| Hello Sinead and welcome to fishlore!
Lovely to have members from the Emerald Isle! Your 6 gal tank is overstocked, Im sorry to say. There is just too many fish in that tank. The general rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish to one gallon of water. I would not add another molly to the group and I would think about taking some of those fish out of the tank. Maybe keep the guppies and neons. Your Penguin fish grows to 2.5 inches, your giant danio and the molly both will get large and can get over 3.5 inches. Im sure you love all your fish... but the advise would be to remove those larger fish asap for the sake of your others.
How long have you had your tank up and running? Do you know about cycling your tank? Is this a new tank and wondering how long you have had all these fish in there? Sorry for all the questions.. but it helps to know in order to better help you. ~ kate |

Ive had tank set up bout 7/8 weeks now, was running for a week with no fish in it, started off with the glow lites and neon and one palty, then added the two guppys giant danio and just last week added the penguin, black mollie and other palty. Yes new tank, first timer here never had fish before so still learning, site is very good. Oh and one more question about water change, i read on one site that should only do a 30% water change every month is correct? others say do a 10% water change once a week and then i saw another that said change every day? im lil lost as to how often i change my water?
Thanks,
Sinead |

Sinead | Glad you found this site and forum.. folks here are very helpful and not judgmental, we all know and remember our own mistakes when starting a tank and we ( speaking for myself..) still are learning! lol..
Well.. it seems that you have a large amount of fish in a tank that has not cycled yet. Which means pretty much that hopefully firstly you will think about returning those larger fish and keep as few as possible. Your tank no doubt is full of ammonia, and nitrite and nitrates which are all toxic, some more than others, like the ammonia. While cycling with fish, you really need to do daily water changes asap. They may not show any signs at the moment, but they will show signs of stress from the high toxins in the water.
so with that said... daily water changes of at least 30% in your case while the tank is cycling. Once your tank cycles you can probably do a weekly water change of around 30-40% depending on how many fish you still have in there, and what the water perimeter readings are. Which brings me to another suggestion, that you buy a reliable water test kit. I do not know what is available there in Ireland, but most folks here use the API FW kit. It is a liquid test kit that has test tubes and solutions to check your pH, Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAtes. Most test strips are not reliable and will give you false readings.
Any thing that we can help you with please feel free to ask.. there will be others along to give you advice and help as well! |

| Ill try and take some pictures tonight and show you all, so far ive found a home for the black mollie and possibly my giant danio, which i feel is loney needs more of tis own kind. Ill keep the guppys and paltys just one more question, feeding!!!! on the back of the flake food says feed 2-3 times a day my bf has a 40/50g tank and he feeds his twice a day but my other friend she only feeds once a day because she doesnt want to fatten her fish she said? how much should i feed? sorry for all the questions, wish i found this site BEFORE i got fish lol |

| Hi Sinead
I think that feeding depends on what fish and how many. I feed my all my fish at least three times a day, sometimes four times. And feed smaller amounts the more times a day that you feed them. |

| Yea, if you give them smaller portions, they'll digest food better. We feed our fish twice a day, each time giving half of a day's food, but 3 or 4 times a day is even better. |

| tank is cool but i would say mix normal gravel with some coloured. coloured gravel is usually covered with something which does not allow bacteria (the good kind) to grow. a couple of real plants is ok dont be nervous they help the tank
what part of ireland are you in, i live in dublin

| Nice looking tank you have. But it feels kind overstocked. Perhaps you might need to do water change more often. Anyways, welcome to Fishlore! |
