Hello from CT

This website is great. I am a beginner to aquariums and I have gotten allot of must needed information from this website and plan on reading up some more before I make my purchase. right now im planning on purchasing a 65 gallon tank and either have an african cichlid tank with a couple of frontosas or just get 2 oscars and a pleco. do you think that would be overstocking my tank? Im also thinking of getting the aquaclear 110 filter. I read the reveiw on the aquaclear 110 but wondering if anyone else had opinions on it.

HI, 65--WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

You can do a lot with a 65 gallon tank, but maybe not oscars.....depending on your bio-load a aquaclear 110 would be enough, or you could get 2 x 70's one at each end...Good Luck and I hope you post often, and never hesitate to ask questions or for help......

so i ended up just purchasing a 55 gallon tank, with an aqua clear 70 filter, and a fluval heater. im gonna have to change my screen name. do you think the aqua clear 70 is good for a 55 gallon tank?

Since the Aquaclear 70 only processes 300 gph, and is therefore adequate for a 30 gallon tank I would still suggest getting either a 110, or 2 of the 70's ....It is always better to have more than enough filtration than not enough.

The rule of thumb for a HOB filter is 10 X the gallons per hour. A 55 gallon tank then would need a filter that moves 550 gph of tank water.. 2 - 70 would be 600 gph which would be good.

Cycle is expensive water. We used it for 2 months when we started and basically, once you start using it, you have to keep using it forever and when you stop using it, then your tank has to cycle normally. It's the wrong type of bacteria and causes mini-cycles.

Hi there and welcome to Fishlore!! I assume by CT you mean cape town SA?
You could maybe get a resun sp1100 or better still 1200 L/P, i find them great in my fresh water tanks. Its always better to get a filter slightly bigger. I'm not very well equipped with oscar knowledge but i think a 55gal is minimum for them tho they'd be much better off with a bigger tank. Stilll you'l find lots pf oscar fans here!
Glad you found this site helpful and goodluck with your setup!
