Hello from Salinas/Monterey County!

Hello! My name is Mike (Pyro) and I am FAIRLY new to the fish hobby, however, I have dug in DEEP on the site.

I started off a long time ago with two tanks. A 10 gallon with various community fish, and a smaller divided 2 gallon with a beta in it.

BADLY.

I did do the cycle before putting fish in, but it was all down hill from there. I didn't monitor ammonia or do water changes. I didn't even know about them until my fish started to die. I went to PetSmart and found out about Ammonia, so I put treatment in, but it was too late. I had one beta with my community fish, and one in the 2 gallon at this point. To give him more room as they kept hitting the glass to get at eachother and were getting pretty banged up.

This made the beta in the 10 gallon really happy and he swam around like crazy, not shy at all. But made the other fish depressed appearently and he died.

When the community fish were dying of ammonia, I took the beta out and put him in the 2 gallon again. Which made HIM depressed at losing all of his space. He wouldnt eat or anything, and he died.

All my fish died.

BUT NOW! I have grown out of irresponsible fish care, and grown into some larger, cycled, and balanced tanks.

I have master test kits, heaters, filters, air pumps, medicines and solvents made for fish and cleaning supplies. The works.

I now have the 10 gallon tank with Tropical Semi-Aggressive Fish in there including 2 mollies, 2 platys, a SMALL Pleco, two swordtails, and a dwarf frog. It seems like a lot, but they are small and live comfortably. One just had babies which are now housed in a breeder, and two more are pregnant.

I also have a 25 gallon (whose fish are going to be migrated to my new 55 gallon as soon as it cycles) which has two Jack Dempsys, a Paradise Fish, a medium sized Pleco, and two other fish that I don't know what they are (pictures coming soon. I think one is a Giant Danio) One looks albino, and the other looks silverish and is ZIPPY! He is a smaller fish in with aggressive larger ciclids, and they don't bother him (or rather they stopped trying because he is so fast!)

The 55 gallon I have will house those fish, and the 25 gallon will house smaller schools of fish. I don't remember their names off hand for some reason, but they are SUPER tiny, and I want to have brighter colors in that tank.

Out of cycle, I have two 10 gallon tanks, one will be set up to house my small fry when they get too big for their breeder, and one as a quarantine/hospital tank. I also have two 2 gallon tanks, not sure about those yet.

At some point I want to breed and sell or give away fish to good homes. The hobby isn't cheap, and being able to make some money WITH the hobby FOR the hobby, by giving people the chance to try a wonderful new hobby at the same time, would be great.

I am very happy to be here and am interested in meeting other fish lovers, and hope to learn a lot about my growing obsession... err... hobby.

Thanks for the kind welcome.

I just finished building the base stand for my 55g tank. Nothing special. The tank is exactly the same length as my couch, so I made a stand exactly the same height out of 2 x 4's. So it becomes a couch-tank. haha.

So while I'm watching my big old 60" TV, my fish can watch with me.

I also purchased some Ghost Shrimp, great little cleaners. I provided lots of hiding places for them in both my 29g and my 10g, in my 10g I found a few this morning, larger ones, hanging out. Either the rest hid, or got eaten, their hard to find. As for my 29g.... ahem... I'm hoping these ghost shrimp didn't go into the light. haha. Either their hiding, or become live feed.

Not sure exactly what kind, the smaller tank one was noted to grow about 8 inches, and the other, 14 inches. We can accommodate both, however, if it gets too large, we have several great LFS that will take them off our hands. Don't worry, we are being very responsible with our fish.
