HI Sam, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

How long has your tank been set up?

At the top of this page is a link under the word ARTICLE in the blue bar. Several of the articles would help you. Setting up a tank for a beginner is one. The MOST important however is the nitrogen cycle. Read it, study it, and start testing your tank.

The test kit, we here at fishlore, recommend is the API Master test kit (liquid). When you get some test results, post them and we will help you understand what is going on in your tank.

NEXT, your question about getting more fish....Please don't, let your fish grow up to fill the tank, if you have to do anything, get plants, or decorations. Your tank already exceeds the stocking limit for a 30 gallon.

The rule of thumb on stocking is 1 inch of ADULT fish per gallon of tank. This takes some research. You have to know just what kind of fish you have, but see what size they are expected to grow up to, and add all those inches up.

IF you are overstocked it will create toxic levels of chemicals (ammonia and nitrite in an uncycled tank, nitrate in the cycled tank). Your fish will be stressed and get sick.

Our whole goal here is to help you have a happy aquarium experience, if you have any questions, feel free to ask, and enjoy jumping in and posting all over.

Samantha...hope you will find and use all the good information we have here. Please ask questions as much as you need to, I stilll have questions no matter how long I've had fish.

Hey Samantha,

I'd recommend not getting any more fish; I started my tank in January (with water, a filter, heater, etc.), then put 15 fish in it about 5 days later, then added another 14 less than a week after that...I had 29 fish in a 25-gallon aquarium and I've lost about 15 fish since then. I have 20 fish at the moment. Anyway, the point is, as tempting as it is to put more fish in your tank, find out how many fish, and of what type, your tank can comfortably support before buying more.

I've got enough fish for now, so I'm going to see about planting my tank a little more densely; I only have 4 plants in it now. Maybe you should move on to decorations for now, as susitna-flower suggested.
