WELCOME to FISHLORE Bede!!!
I believe I responded to your question earlier today about a 40 long vs a tall. WELL.....
Now you give a little more info, and with it, I would suggest, as some have already aluded to, THE BIGGER the BETTER!!!!
If you are just starting out, a 55 gallon is really good, really one of the most economical tanks, because they are so widely used, and then you will want to get a 10 gallon for a quarantine tank......
The water conditions are easier to keep stable the larger tank you get, AND the most important thing is it will give you enough room to indulge several fish, where a smaller tank really limits what you can have.
If you have been reading on the forum for awhile, you already know about cycling your tank BEFORE adding fish, and that you should research the fish and not get more for your tank than will adhear to the 1" of adult fish per gallon of tank. That said, the rest is up to you on the kinds of fish you get. Just remember when you are making your decisions, read up on them first, and if it says they do best in a "school", plan that into your scheme and fish
inch per gallon. Even 55 inches of fish dissappear very quickly, and will not seem like much when they are small......But quickly enough the tank will be overcrowded if you aren't careful, and the fish getting sick......so I really hope you enjoy this adventure, and I agree It is SO much fun to have something to do with your kids, even when they are grown!!
