Hello. I have three fish tanks and one turtle tank.

10 gallon with 3 Semi-baby convicts (1"-.5") and firemouth.
29 gallon tall with one convict mother and 13 baby fry
30 gallon wide with 2 red slider turtles (most likely male, short toe nails)
55 gallon with a red devil (6"), jack demsey (3") and 2 convicts, (one full size at 4")

Heres the reason for joining. When I got the red devil from the pet store he came home expecting to be a green terror. soon he grew like crazy and started changing colors to a pale orange/pink color. May I remind you when purchased him he was a light green color with circle/dots down the middle of him (a lot like the base color for my firemouth body). I took pictures to work and a fellow team member said I had a red devil/midas.

I need to learn more about what tank mates are compatible and what size should the red devil be alone? I love my jack and so far they do not seem to fight in the 55 gallon tank. By no means do I want the red devil to kill the Jack. Thank you.

Welcome to Fishlore!

The Red Devil Cichlid gets to 15" and will get large enough to need a 75g by itself, and become EXTREMELY aggressive when they get older. If I were you I'd see about returning it, unless you can devote the financial means to house the fish in a 75g by itself.

Good job on your homework, you got the fish housed properly (of course if the red devil had of been a green terror as you though, but oh well) for the information you had at the time.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your welcomes. Some sites I read about it says the red devil/midas fish get to 10 -12 inches if lucky. So I am surprised 15". At what length do you really know the 55 Gallon is too small for him. Yeah i was sadden to find out the tank would have to be changed after realizing i bought home the wrong fish. I have gotten attached to him as he is very social and even lets me pet out side the glass and he rubs back. So Yes I will purchase a larger tank if I have too but I am trying find out what length that should be at. Would my Jack Demsey be happy in my 29 gallon tall tank alone and/or with convicts? I did find a place who will take all the Cons...thank god.

welcome to Fishlore! It stinks that the pet store gave you the wrong fish and I would definitely talk to them about them taking the red devil back. I think your JD would be ok with the 2 convicts, if CWC agrees with that. I'm fairly new to cichlids myself.

I would think the Jack should be just fine with the convicts in a 29g. Your Red Devil could, by the time it is 8 inches, do well in a 75g. You MIGHT could handle it in a 65g, but of course the larger the tank the better.

Best of luck.
