Hey guys- newbie here...

I am about as green as can be, but I still got myself a couple fish (I know, I know- but I couldn't help myself..) so after I got a single molly, I opted for a bigger tank and some goodies, then I couldn't resist and got 2 more (total of 3 mollies in one 10 gallon tank..)- they are really cool little creatures that really like to eat a bunch (but I don't overfeed them )

I have 3 mollies (I hope) and I had a few questions for you guys...

first off, what are they? I mean gender wise...

not sure why I got these, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out which is male and female...

and I know you guys (and gals) like pics, but i'll do you one better, since I couldn't take any decent shots, here is a vid...

Clicky...

also, about the nitrogen cycle

it says that a normal process will take at least a month... but my little 10 gallon tank seems to have done it in a few days... how come?

my initial testing of the water when it was clean was clear all across the scales- nitrate at 0, nitrite at 0, and ph at 8.0

a few days later the nitrate is at 20, the nitrite at 3, and ph is at 7.4... why did it change so fast?
(btw, I have the fish in there at this time, just been feeding them flakes at fairly regular intervals... no natural vegetation in the tank yet and just a regular filter thing...)

so yeah, thats it for now- thanks for any help

and sorry for the long post...

welcome to fishlore

Your tank is cycling. At the start of the cycle, you can often have 0 for readings. what is your ammonia reading? are you using liquid testing? i'd highly recommend using "Prime" as your water conditioner and doing 25% water changes every other day (testing before each water change) until the tank cycles in 4-6 weeks. Are you putting any additives in the water? What are you treating your tap water with?

Sexing Livebearers - the male livebearers have a cone-shaped gonopodium and the female livebearers have a fan-shaped anal fin. that link has pics to illustrate in it.

I actually don't have anything to test the ammonia right now... sorry..

as far as conditioning goes, I am using "aquasafe" by tetra aqua... this stuff-

and so I guess I have 3 males then, right?

they seem to be getting along fine for now, that should be an ok arrangement for them... right?...

Looks like you have 3 males.

Welcome to fishlore, and congrats on not overstocking your first tank!

Welcome to Fishlore. Very pretty mollies. Please keep not overstocking and you'll have some healthy fish. Great move. Most of us started by chucking a million too many fish in our tanks, and had lots of problems with the fish for it.

Prime:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+112994
would be a big help during cycling. The conditioner you have is good, but Prime will help protect your mollies from the toxins in the water.

API Master FW Kit:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113074
this kit is great for testing the water. If you already have liquid tests for nitrites, nitrates, pH and high pH, you can buy the ammonia testing kit separately.

Thanks for the welcomes guys.. I have been lurking for a little while, trying to soak up as much info as possible.. (don't want these buggers dying on me now :P) its interesting that such small fish need so much room... but I guess its no different than us...

and thanks for those links cobetta, I will definitely pick those up, they are fairly inexpensive so thats great..

also, just an interesting story when I tried to pick up my first one.. I went and chose one, it was a really nice one, all black with a yellow tail- also a molly...

but I set it in the cart and started on my way to the check stands... I stopped at an aisle and pushed the cart inside and turned around to look at something on eht shelves... well I wasn't turned for longer than a minute when I looked back and the fish was gone... yep.. gone, bag and all... the sales people thought I ate it or something when I went back for another....

Welcome, I love your mollies, how are they doing? I think your escaping molly story is just amazing! How dare those aliens! The yellow on the tail really sets off the other color.....

Welcome to Fishlore

Male mollies have sharp anal fins and a sharp body, female mollies r rounder and bigger and have big stomach they r good breeders if u have males and females together u will soon have fry, be sure to have 2 females for 1 male(that's the common rule), when the females r pregnant their stomach will grow bigger, u have to separate the adult fish after they give birth to babies.
