Re: Hello and Welcome All!

Hi im 26 from New Zealand and i have just found a new love "MY TROPICAL FISH".

Thanks to my flatmate we now have 8 neon tetras, 2 pilaties, 4 guppy's, 2 blue gouramis, 1 baby pleco and one naughty red fin shark baby and 2 goldfish. And they are addictive we know both our local petshops owners now by name and they grab the net everytime we go in.

Love our fish family, it keeps the 5yr old and 18 mth old kids happy for ages watching them swim around (actually i think it amuses adults alot more!).

Our house is full with people and animals we take in stray cats and dogs and the occasional bird give ihem some TLC and then find them loving homes but the fish are here to stay as well as the 10yr old cat who on occasion has threatend us with the fish silly cat forgot that we know he hates water on him.

Re: Hello and Welcome All!

Hello, So I'm new here so I thought I'd say hi. I've been looking for a good forum for awhile and this one caught my attention. I have some Columbian Sharks I'm keeping that are very unique creatures. They are currently in Brakish water limbo. I plan on adapting them to a marine tank, so I expect to need some advice. I am an avid freshwater keeper. I have 150 goin on 400 gals of fish haven. I've raised them big and small but have much to learn. I look forward to talking with anyone offering or looking for help.

Re: Hello and Welcome All!

Hi,
Another new member from NZ. Had a few fish when I was young but didn't know much about looking after them. After reading the posting here and around the net, I am surprise how my fish manage to survive for so long.
Now my 9 yrs old son wanted a tropical fish tank and his Dad seems to be more keen than him

Re: Hello and Welcome All!

Hello all! I've posted already & gotten much help for my new cycling questions, but I seem to have lost my manners! I haven't introduced myself! I am a stay-at-home mother of 2 preschoolers. I was a US Air Force Personnel Officer until I was 7 mos pregnant with my first baby & then I got out to commit my life to raising my kids. Being a mom is the toughest (harder than basic training!) & most rewarding job I've ever had. My wonderful husband of almost 7 years got me a 10 gal fish tank for Christmas (the only thing I really wanted). No, I take that back--I REALLY want a Newfoundland dog, but the kids are too small yet for me to take on that big of an additional responsibility. So my fishies it is! My tank is cycling, and I change water each day--I enjoy watching my plants grow & fish do their thing! (I look forward to getting more once my tank stabilizes!) Other than that, I am a Minnesota girl who just spent almost 4 years in the NW Florida heat (I don't do heat/hot summers well!) and am enjoying my first white winter since 2002! Look forward to chatting with y'all more!

Re: Hello and Welcome All!

Hello everyone! I am new and live in Southeren Cailfornia. I am a mom of two kids, married and have a small zoo. We live with cats, dogs. assortment of birds and of course lots of fish. I have a 125 gallon fresh water tank. It is home to four blood parrots, fin tail catfish, two picts cats and a red tail shark. We also have a ten gallon tank. We put dividers and have two bettas, a girl and a boy, guppies, corys and mini platies. Every year we go to the Renaissance faire here. I make the costumes. I also am a leather crafter.

Re: Hello and Welcome All!

I am a young grandma, live in the frozen north, Alaska, and love my tropical tank. Overcrowded as it is, it takes lots of care, but well worth it. Everyone is healthy and happy, except the lone male guppy I got in with another purchase (he was a tiny baby), now it looks like my black ghost knife took a taste of his tail!
Having this hobby here is an adventure in itself. I live 80 miles from any store....Power is by generator, so my tank is totally turned off at night! Lots of rocks and a good size means the temp. only drops 2-4 degrees at night. I rationalize that in the wild it gets cooler when the sun goes down....
My new project is to build my own tank. Am thinking it will be plexi bottom, with plumbing drilled through, tempered sides approx. 60"x30"x48". It will go in an interior wall (between living room and kitchen) which is supported below by a wall in the basement. I plan on an RO continuous in supply, overflow, and a cannister filter, ozone, charcoal filters plumbed through the bottom. I would love to hear ideas on how this would work. My kids are outgrowing their space, and I want something that would not need water changes every other day, because I can't say no to a lovely fish!

This is a great site!

Re: Hello and Welcome All!

hi everyone! i'm from west yorkshire in the uk. no snow yet! just got a 15gal tank (60L). never had fish before (had pond fish, but they just seem indestructible and look after themselves! - they dont mind if its hot or cold, or if there's ammonia etc!! - they grow and breed regardless!). in my time i've had cats, dogs, hamsters, an owl, chinchilla's, rabbits, guinea pigs, hens, cockateil ....all sorts! my mum has alpacas so i help with those sometimes too. however as my son is allergic to animals (anaphylaxis....so definitely never having any more furry creatures!), i turned to fish! hoping once i get the hang of it to get more tanks and bigger ones. cant wait. trying to get my kids involved so we can all pressure my husband into getting more too!! anyway, enough of my rambling!

Re: Hello and Welcome All!

thanks atmmachine! he's nearly convinced i think! my birthday isnt too far off....so lots of heavy hints and pointing them out should help!! the kids are about hooked i think..they rush down stairs to turn the tank light on and give the fish their breakfast and count them (do register like at school!!), so we're nearly all on the same side!! hubby was looking at a bristlenose thing (sorry...is it a plec? u know what i mean anyway..), and asking me if we can have one of those... so he's showing an interest! by next yr house will be wall to wall with tanks in every room!! (well ...if i win lottery anyway!)

I've had alot of experience with that problem u have to bribe be nice to them and do the dishes ect. after about 2 weeks of being nice asking politely and still offer to pay for them but that may not work well but if u r nice enough i think that u will and try to convince them Callum!
