Re: another newbie with a question

if your tank levels are all good like you say and you recently added 2 new fish well the most likely reason is you've introduced a disease into your tank with the new fish?

first of all did any of the other fish look unhealthy in the tank that u bought ur new fish out of?>
did they get a good slow process off putting them in ur tank?

i think you should put a general disease killer into your tank since its way to late at this stage to just quarantine ur new fish separately

let me no how u go cheers,

Re: another newbie with a question

that tank is pretty overstocked and that's probably part of the problem. the guppys are the first to be affected, being the weakest fish most likely. that and/or a new disease are the most likely source of the trouble.. what are the symptoms of the fish sick and/or the symptoms of the fish that have died? what's the current chemistry readings?

Re: another newbie with a question

Hi there and welcome to the forum. I would guess that you are in the UK, since you use Pets at Home, and their advice isn't always good, so be wary of it.

Guppies are not particularly strong and do tend to fall over at the slightest problem, but I would go along with Bryn on this and suspect an imported disease, especially if the fish came from above! I have had loads of problems with their fish, they are always very stressed out, sometimes covered in white-spot, the water parameters of their tanks are intolerable at times, and the fish move in and out so quickly that they don't have chance to settle down.

Meth Blue is a good med to start with if you are uncertain as to what is causing the deaths, but only use half the amount recommended or the tank will stain permanently.

The other thing to do is to inspect the fish very closely to see if there are any signs of disease there. I would start with the newest arrivals, since they probably brought it in. Look for white spots, fin damage, reddened gills, blotches or patches on the scales or fins, raised scales, or anything else that looks like it doesn't belong. If nothing shows, then it's possibly an internal parasite problem, which is very difficult to diagnose, but simple to treat. I use Inter-pet meds, as they are very effective and easy to get.

Let us know how you get on.

Before adding any meds, be sure to remove any active carbon from the filter, if it's fitted.
