New here and Loving it

Hi I'm Tiff, new to owning a fish tank and new to Fish Lore. My boyfriend Mark and I started a fish tank about 1 month ago, and we already want to up grade. We have 2 cherry barbs and 5 tiger barbs in a 10 gallon tank planing on going to at least a 20G if not 30G. We are both Captains in the Army and live in MO. Unfortunately the only aquarium store around here is Walmart, so we've done everything by trial and error. We lost 2 tiger barbs the first week, chewy and stewy---god rest their little souls. I plan on spoiling the rest of my fish to the best of my abilities. Any idea's let me know. I recieved some great feed back and have been extatic with this site.

welcome to fishlore. i think you've already gotten this advice - but yea, upgrade to a 20 or 30g and up each barb school to 6 with lots of plants and stuff to swim around/through/etc.. those are pretty barbs and i think you can make a great tank with them.

Re: New here and Loving it

Welcome to fishlore. Tiff, have you read all the links at the bottom of the page on the nitrogen cycle, and articles for beginners? It will help you have more success right from the start if you understand the cycle, and how to get through it with fish. I have found that tanks 55 gal or bigger are the easiest to deal with. It is much easier to keep the water healthy, and the fish you can have are more interesting, and you will be able to keep several fish without overcrowding. SO, that's all from THIS peanut gallery for now. Good Luck

Welcome Tiff14RN!!!

My husband is active duty Army too and we are stationed at Redstone Aresenal in AL. So I'm going to take a wild guess that you are a nurse as well? I am--Labor and Delivery.

Well, I had to say hello and welcome you. GOOD LUCK! You'll definitely get better advice here than you will at WalMart, not to mention I've never had good luck with healthy fish/ghost shrimp there.

Best wishes,

-M
