New fish breeder with questions...

Hi! I'm guppybreedingbeginner and I just registered. I have a few questions about my aquarium. I have 2 male fancy tail guppies, 3 females, and two goldfish. I want the guppies to breed, but I don't know if the will with the goldfish around. If anyone could help, that would be great.

Re: New fish breeder with questions...

Hi and welcome to FishLore!
Goldfish and guppies need totally different environments.
Guppies need warm water - around 76-78F
Goldfish are cool water fish and need around 65-72F. since they are such big waste proucers they need 20G for the first fish and 10g for each additional fish .. they will not reach their natural potential size in smaller tanks either.
Most fish will eat anything big enough to fit in its mouth. One of these days the goldfish will be big enough to eat the guppies and will definately eat teh fry. Hope that helps

So, I need to put the goldfish in a separate tank?? My parent probably won't like that but oh well, I'm the one that cleans the tanks. Thanks for the tip.

Re: New fish breeder with questions...

Yes, unfortunately goldfish get HUGE and need tons of space. The pet stores sell them when they are just tiny babies, so many people don't realize how big these fish can get. Unless you can give them a pretty big home (25-30 gallons or bigger) their growth will be affected and they may have health problems.

Out of curiosity, how big is your tank?

Re: New fish breeder with questions...

welcome to the site. i'd agree on the goldfish going in a seperate tank. i'd also recommend a couple of grow-out tanks for the guppy fry once they are old enough to determine gender. then you can seperate the males and females to discourage inbreeding and give them room to grow until you sell them. you could raise the fry in one tank that has either a sponge filter or HOB filter with an intake covered with netting to keep the fry safe and move one gender to the other tank.

Re: New fish breeder with questions...

I now separated my goldfish into a separate tank ( its a 2.5 gallon, but when the goldfish get too big for it I have a friend that will be more than happy to take them), and the guppies are in a 5 gallon tank, and I think one of the females is pregnant, but it might end up in a miscarriage because I moved my furniture around and the tank might have had a few too many shakes while moving my desk, but thanks for the tips!!

Re: New fish breeder with questions...

Your guppy will probably be ok. They are tough little fish. It's probably time for your friend to take the goldfish for you because 2.5 G is not big enough for even one tiny goldfish. Sorry to have to tell you that but it's best for your goldfish if they go to at least a 30G tank for the two of them.

well then starting as a breeder? The one thing with guppies is when the female gives birth the babies are swimming around and at the same time they are dinner for everyone

Re: New fish breeder with questions...

Unfortunately, I think your goldfish are already too large for the 2.5 gallon tank......One would fit for now, but two is very cramped. You will have to change water frequently.....
