Tropic Marin Bio -Calcium

Am Cycling a 98 gallon half circle with 125 lbs. of live rock. No corals will be present for at least a year or too. The guy that got me the rock, and set it up for me told me to get tropic marin calcium, Kent marine iodine, and Kent Marine Stron.

He said this would calcify the live rock and start some Coraline algae growth........

Anyways he told me just to add the right amount of scoops to my sump area daily. When i bought the tropic marin at my LFS they told me that adding the calcium to the sump could wear down the impeller on my return pump.

I started just mixing the calcium with water ina cup and adding it directly to my tank, but just read that that makes calcium carbon, and its not benefitting my aquarium.

How should i add the calciumm correctly to the body of water?

Do you have a calcium test kit? I would not advise supplementing anything without testing for it first.

It probably will calcify the LR but there really isn't any need to use reef supplements. And that's what they're having you do. You don't have a reef tank so there really isn't any need to add these products.

And as harpua2002 said, you shouldn't add stuff like that without knowing what the current levels are.

Now if you're looking at getting some coraline algae going, the simplest and easiest way is find a small piece of LR that already has some and seed it from there. You'd be surprised how quickly it'll grow once there's even just a little bit in the tank.

Check with different LFS in the area. Another good source is other SW types who have established tanks. You'd be surprised how helpful most are. If you lived near me, I'd be happy to give you small piece for no charge.
