How to get Nitrite, Nitrate and Ammonia on 0?

Hey all,

I was wondering how you get your nitrite, nitrate and ammonia all on 0?

Thanks ALot,

Matt

I assume you know about the ammonia and nitrite on zero, but to have nitrate as well, I read somewhere in Fishlore that having a heavily planted tank and understocking (and maintaining your water changes) gave you the best chance to reach that goal - assuming normal filtration methods.

Hi Life
Matt has a s/w tank. I'm not sure the same things apply in a s/w tank as a f/w tank.

Do you have plenty of live rock? Do you have a heavy fish load? Are you using tap water, or RO/DI for your source water? Is the tank relatively new?

I've found through keeping several nano tanks that as the tank matures and stabilizes (as I'm sure you know, this can take many months), the nitrate will eventually hit 0, or close to it, and stay there. If you have ammonia or nitrite, there is something going on in the tank like maybe overfeeding or a mini cycle. What is your maintenance schedule like?
