Need help with water test

I bought a new fish the other day, a jawfish, and i knew getting it that its a very delicate fish. Well, they are also known for jumping, i acclimated him for a good hour or more slowly adding my tank water to the bag he was in into a bucket. Then when it came time to take him out of the bucket and put him into the tank....he jumped out of the net and onto my floor with a nice THUD!!! I quickly scooped him up and put him in the tank, the next day he was dead. I think i know the cause of death...Anyway i figured since my LFS has a 2 day guarantee on SW fish id bring it back. Well i did and i knew that i needed a water sample as well. So i decided i would test the water before i brought the fish back and i did, my water levels were perfect. So i bring the fish and a seperate sample of my water so they dont use the dead fish water so they can test it. They test my water and boom my ammonia is high and my nitrates are even worse?!?!?!?! Now im mad, so i go home and test my water again, my levels are perfect?? Now im really confused... So its already too late to go back to the store and now i cant even get my money back because i am past the two days and to the pet store my water is toxic. Still angry the next day i call a friend with a 90 gallon tank whos been doing this for the past 10 years. He tests my water so i can know for sure, and his test says that my water levels are perfect!!!! Within these few days i never once did a water change or anything so i could know the truth, does anyone think besides me that i got screwed by my LFS?

Im sorry you lost your fish xxx

I always watch them to make sure they are reading the tests correctly because lets be honest alot of the lfs have staff that are not very educated on fish and if they are in need of someone to work an area they will give them the basic in a five minute drill. If your test results came out perfect and so did your friend's testing then I hate to say that you may have been had...

Well, I really dont know what to say. Maybe next time such mishap take place, take your test kit with you so you can make a fool out of them. If they have well kept livestocks, why not use them rather than go to another w/ less quality livestock. I always was willing to pay ilttle more for quality livestock since such maintenace take lots of efforts (clean tanks, , healthy fish, well fed fish, quaranteeing of new fish before sale) by lfs. I always tried to get to know the owner/mgr where after a while was able to have them hold fish for me for few days w/ new arrivals but laways kept my end of bargain and p/u fish when well stablized (healthy and eating) at lfs.
And besides, as you have said you know the COD on this case. I am not trying to upset you in anyway and agree that what they did was unthinkable but source of good livestocks are hard to come by locally, at least IMO.

Not to defend what they did in any way but maybe it was Karma for trying to return a fish that you let get away. It doesn't seem to me that is what a warranty is supposed to cover. Did you inform them of what had happened?

no of course not would you? i doubt dropping a fish on the floor is covered but regardless of what happened you wouldnt at least try to get your money back like i did? its discouraging either way to buy something and have it not with you 12 hours after you buy it.

I wouldn't try to make someone else pay for my mistake. It doesn't really seem right. I don't want to turn your thread into a debate though so I will drop it. I don't blame you for wanting your money back though. Stuff like that isn't fun. Again I didn't mean to point fingers or anything best wishes.

Dont feel too bad. Just unfortunate mishap. Now, you know better.
This sort of things probably happened to most of hobbyist one time or another including me too.

One of my friend who was in S/W Wholesale, used to help out w/ new arrival whenever I can and friend will treat me with livestock from time to time. When the fish are out of box, must be careful with bright light. Used to cut the bags in dim/dark with mini flashlight on forehead (Even shadows can spook fish that just came out of dark box). When I bring home few out of box, i had my chilfren around me to show/teach/get involved. Onetime they accidentally kicked acclimating tub (cat litter Pan) and Pink Square Anthias must had a heart attack, splashed across the pan couple of times, open its gill plate and Dead. My children are very careful with fish from there on. A Hand on learning exp for my children.

Hope it's a smooth sailing for you from now on!!!
