creamy water emergency

Hello,
I have a friend with a 90 gallon saltwater tank and she is desperately looking for some assistance. She went away from her tank for about 2 hours and came home and the tank was creamy colored and the ammonia was up to 0.5. There were little chunks floating as if someone has gotten cut up in the power heads. Her tank has been set up for two years with live rock, 4 power heads, and a protein skimmer. She has an anemone but is looks fine except he is closed up cause of the water quality and is not near any power heads. Everyone else has been accounted for. Inhabitants are the general residents of a reef tank. Corals are leathers, zooanthids, and mushrooms.

We did a 36 gallon water change. And put carbon in the filter. Any ideas what happened?

The only thing I can think of is some sort of spawning event. Anemone or coral. How is the tank today ? It could be a bacteria bloom also ! Is she dosing sugar ? Did she add anything to the tank recently ?

No she doesnt dose with sugar. No she hasnt added anything. So is a bacteria bloom really bad? She said it didnt look like a spawning event because of the chunks in the water also. Sorry I didnt get your response in my email (long story) so I didnt respond for a while. My appology, thanks!

Not really. When we syphoned out the water it was gross looking but not particularly stinky. Although I didnt get really close to the bucket and smell... so it could have been...

I havent talked to her in a few days but my thoughts are that it was either a little guy that she missed got caught in the powerhead or a part of the anenome dieing... I just wanted too know if anyone else had had such an experience... like, "ya that happened to be right before my anemone died"... hopefully everything is doing alright though, I should see her Thursday. Thanks for your alls help!
