Putting tap water and prime at the same time?

I have been doing my water change with a convenient syphon connected to the faucet, mixing cold and hot water to get the temperature right and then pour it in the aquarium very very slowly, small amount at the time. It takes about 30 minutes to transfer 15 gallons or so. I add Prime directly in the aquarium as I start the transfer.

Is this still dangerous for chlorine? or will Prime detoxify it as it enter the aquarium? How long does it take to Prime to neutrilize chlorine?

I know it would be best to add prime to the tap water before but then I would not be able to use my syphon and this would become really cumbersome to transfer the water. But is it safe?

I do only about 15% to 20% water change per day.

that should be fine people that use pythons do the same thing you do, but you do need to make sure that you treat for the amount of gallons in the entire tank, not just the gallons that you're adding (i.e. if you have a 20 gallon tank and are doing a 50% water change, treat for the whole 20 gallons not just the 10 that you're changing). prime will neutralize the chlorine within a minute or less.

Same here I use a python too and I regulate the temp and add prime to the tank for the full aquarium capacity. Good Luck.

thanks a lot.

Ok that's good to know. Reading the description of a python I think that's probably what I have. It's very convenient as it can be used to both drain the aquarium or fill it.

I always put enough Prime to cover the full tank.

How do you control your temp with yours? with the hot water faucet?

I use a python to and I add directly to the tank...yes controling the temp with the hot water facet and cold facet mixed until the same ( or very close) temp and then start filling. I add the prime just before starting the water and dose for the volume of the tank.

i suck it out with the python but usually put it back in a gallon at a time. maybe i'll try this method. how fast should i fill it? i don't want the prime to be "used up" by all the REGULAR tank water before it can clean up the new chlorine water. i've got a 29 gallon.

The regular water in the tank has already been dechlorinated so it's not going to use up the fresh prime your putting in.
I use a water hose to siphon my tanks and then connect it to my kitchen sink to refill. I adjust the temp by using the hot water tap. Add the prime into the stream of water and continue to fill the tank. You don't have to do it slowly either

Is there any danger of the chlorine killing the bacteria in a sponge filter before the water conditioner removes it? Turning off power filters and canister filters would protect them from any chlorine. Should I remove sponge filters while filling the tank?

For fear of disrupting the biological filtration, I have been using my python to remove water during a filter change and 5 gallon buckets to refill. If I can safely use the python to fill the tank it would save me a lot of work. I just don't want to risk my fish .

Thanks.
