"Prime" use (and over use)

hey so i ran out of chlorine neutralizer; i went to my store and he told me that Prime was the best stuff out there, though more expensive would last me much longer. I mentioned that I had only heard of it used for initial cycling but would give it a shot. He also siad it would get rid of any ammonia as well as chlorine. I grabed a bottle, the instructions on the back read,

" use 1 cap ful (5mL) for each 50gal of new water. For smaller doses please note each cap thread is approx. 1ml ...ext."

i have a 20 gal tank that had 4 platies in it and was just planing on using prime for neutralizing the chlorine in my tap water when i do my water changes. (up to now ive used something that i got with my initial pack..aquasafe. I normaly do a 10% (2 gal) change every sunday, the last of the aquasafe was used yesterday. i did the math and i would only have to use 0.2mL of prime for my 2 gal wc.

...the real question
has anyone ever had problems with using to much Prime in a wc? i cant exactly measure out 0.2 ml so could i just eyeball less than 0.5 ml? will that be ok or could it potentially hurt my fish? also if that is the case should i just try to do a larger wc like 5 gal and use around 1ml?

anyways, if you can help thanks.

hi tom..it wont get rid of it but will neutralize it to non toxic for for 24 hour until another water change...that when cycleing a tank..its the best for cycleing and neutralizing.....for every day maintenance, it is the best...I dont think you can overuse it with the exception of pouring an entire bottle in...you will love it!! so just use the .5ml and you will be fine

I have used prime for a while now.....I use 1 drop per gallon.....This has worked well for me and I have very sensitive betta fry who's water I change with it....The only thing I have noticed about prime is it leaves a film on the top of the water....Has anyone else noticed this?

I moved your thread to a more appropriate forum.

I thought the directions on the bottle of Prime gave the amount of drops to use per gallon?

I have too many bubble wands in my tanks so no film here..but im sure with your breeding / fry grow out tanks with less movement it will have it...alot have said they get a film from lack of water movement when using it

Using a little more Prime than it calls for won't hurt a thing. I use it in my fry tanks even I use a syringe(It's marked in ml) like you can buy in the baby dept to dispense medicine to measure my Prime. With all my tanks I'm more precise in measuring it so it will last a bit longer Yes it does tell how many drops to use per gallon.

its 2 drops per gallon, FYI. they say that in an emergency you can use up to 5 times the dose, so you should be fine.

On the bigger bottles it doesn't say 2 drops per gallon(I looked ) but on my small 50ml bottle (I saved the bottle ) it says "use 2 drops for each 1 US gallon of new water." I guess they figure if you bought the little bottle you weren't going to be doing big water changes.
