Using Prime in freshwater tanks

Can a person use too much prime and if so will it harm the fish?

You can use Prime up to 5x's the regular dose and it will not harm the fish. At least that is what it says on the bottle.

It's very concentrated, but I'm not sure that you can harm the fish with it. At most, it may cause an over-buildup of slime coating if you dumped a whole bottle in but I'm not even sure how likely that is.

Thank you! I'm cycling a 90 gallon new tank and accidently put way too much prime in and started freaking out. Should I be doing water changes because my amonia is high? I know it's cycling as it's only been up and running for about 3 weeks. I have a 29 gallon tank that's been up and running for almost 2 years but I forgot about all and dont's in cycling.

Are you cycling your tank w/ or w/o fish?

Cycling with fish, I'd recommend 25-40% water changes every 1-2 days, preferrably daily.

Thanks so much. I couldnt remember if I was supposed to do a water change during the cycling process. Your help is much appreciated!

If you were cycling without fish, which is the best way so that you do not stress your fish during a cycle, then you would not have to do any water changes til the tank cycles. At that point you would do a water change to get the nitrates down and then add fish.
Since you are trying to cycle your tank with fish, you will have to do daily water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels down and spare your fish in the tank any toxins that are present. It makes the cycle process slower, but necessary under these conditions.
Have you picked up an API master freshwater test kit yet? Once you do, you will be able to keep track of the readings and know when the cycle is complete.

BTW Prime is a great water conditioner, I recommend it to anyone, actually I prefer it. And good luck with the cycling.
