Water Changes

Hi Guys,

Had some doubts on the water changes.
i have a 26 Gallon freshwater fish tank which has 6 Carps, 3 goldfish, 2 pleco & 2 snails. i was wondering if a fish dies in the tank, is it necessary to do a water change, if yes then what amount of water needs to be changed?

Thanks in advance..

Regards
Sudesh

Welcome,

if a fish dies you should check the water parameters if ammonia = 0 Nitrites = 0 and some Nitrates then a water change is unnecessary just make sure you take it out as soon as possible also with the fish stocked you are overstocked which may cause problems later on. a goldfish needs 20gal and 10gal for each additional goldfish also the plecos reach 18inch if they are commons. (plecos and goldfish both produce lots of waste).

Hi Mike,

Thanks a lot for quick response.

Normally when i see a fish at last stage of its life, i quickly move it to separate tank which is a 15 Gallon tank( this is not a Quarantine tank), But 2 weeks back one of my carp died in the main tank, and i immediately removed it, but i was bit concerned but the water.

Sudesh

do you have a test kit to test the water its pretty important to own one also i read on your profile you don't use water conditioners is this correct? might be the reason why one of your fish died.

I am really sorry to tell that i don't have any kind of testing kits as of now, need to pick it up, as here in Bangalore(India) there are really a quite few Aquarium pet store who sell only fishes, and some time medicine that too only for ICH, so its pretty difficult for me to find a testing kit. But my water looks clean(i.e. its not cloudy or dirty) and also smells good and the bubbles pop out pretty quick as soon as they reach the water surface. But i know the testing kit is really critical kit for any aquarium hobbyist. May be mike i will try to find the kit on the ebay or some where who can ship the product to Bangalore.

P.s : I guess the last which which died was 10 or 12 months back and i guess that was not because of water, and it was my mistake, as i didn't examine the fish properly when i bought.

Regards,
Sudesh
