Tapwater is generally okay for freshwater aquarium water changes, as long as the water isn't chlorinated, or as long as you use a dechlorinator. If you've got a well, your water may not be chlorinated. If you're on municipal water, it's almost guaranteed to be chlorinated.

Just do simple pH test on your well water and go w/ fish from such pH water.

if you want to be safe, prime is a great water conditioner

also, i'd test all of the parameters of your well water to be on the safe side as well, just to be sure

A good point. While well water likely isn't chlorinated (unless you chlorinate it yourself), it may contain metals that might be stressful to your fish. Prime does well to detoxify many heavy metals.

Speaking of water changes. Im just getting my 29g up and running after a 4 year hiatus and have been trying to re educate myself.

My question is this. When doing a water change, aside from dechlorinating it. Do you normally let it sit for awhile to get to room temp before adding it to the tank?

What do you recommend, I dont want to shock the fish by dumping in water thats to cold.

I know what its like when I jump into a cold lake, I dont want my fish to experience that! :-)

yeah, i try to get it to be the right temperature by using a bathtub or shower and measuring the temp, but you can pretty easily buy a small heater to get it up to the right temp.

and you're right that it can definitely shock your fish, water changes temperature pretty quickly when you add hot to cold, and it can be VERY stressful to them

good luck
