Lowering nitrates by water changes

I use to do 10% water changes on my 10g and the nitrate level is 20 PPM.Can increasin it to 20% lower the nitrates?

yes, more water changes, or bigger ones, can lower nitrates. You could also try some harty live plants to use nitrates. Java Moss and Watersprite are some great beginner fish.

also with more water changes as angelfish says, making sure there is no leftover food and maybe smaller portions of food each feeding..the smaller tanks are harder to control nitrates and sometimes require more water changes...
