Fish rescue / Really BAD water

I rescued some large fish today from an Oxford House. The water was so murky I could hardly see the fish. I know that I did not want to put a 6" oscar, 2 6" jack Dempsey's and 2 Placos 1- 14" and 1 -8" in a new tank. So I brought each fish home in 5 gal of the dirty water and left about 1" of water in the tank. We have it filled and the fish in the murkey water now, and the question I had is how much water should I change and how often? I am in the process of building a wall stand for my 85 gal so I will be able to seperate them out.

Thanks

To start I would change out 50% a day in two 25% changes. These can be one right after the other.

Test your water every day before the change. As soon as the water condition improves to 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 10-20 nitrate, you can slow the changes down to maintain that condition.

What size tank are these fish being housed in now? You have enough fish there to require 300 or more gallons. Is there any way you can re home one of the plecos? If you keep up with the water changes your algae shouldn't be a bad problem, and they add huge bio load to the tank, ALL these fish are messy, but a pleco might be easier to find a new home for.

Good job on the rescue!

Rescued fish

All of these fish are crammed into a 55gal. tank. I may have a home for the 2 Pleco's today and I have some one interested in the Jack Dempsey pair, but I wont let tem go until the girl looks better. All of the water values are normal except Amonia wich is (0.5ppm)I did a 60% water change just to get them here. The amonia levels were at 5.0 after that. I could not believe they were alive. Today I have been changing out 5 gal every hour for 5 hours and now I will wait until tonigt to test it again. The water is almost clear. I will try to post yesterdays pic and todays so you can see the difference. Remember yesterdays photo was after more tha half of the water was changed. So far they are all still alive.
