Emergency Water change query

Hey all,

Quick query. I need to do a quick water change. Think I have a bit of an ammonia issue. Can't do a test for it as I don't have an ammonia test kit. Can't get one til next week. Christmas... no money etc. I have a new tank which has been running for about 4 weeks. Currently have 6 Zebra Danio's. They seem to have stopped eating and are swimming at the top of the tank. I had a look this morning and I think their gills were a bit red but it may have been me still half asleep. Have tested nitrates and the level seems to be between 0 and 0.1 which seems ok.

Question is: If I am doing a water change when i get home from work. Tap water is going to be probably a bit to cold. Is it safe to mix this with warmer water to bring the temp up a bit? I have the solution for chlorine / chloramine so I don't see a problem there.

cheers

You will need to introduce the water at the same temperature (within 2-3 degrees farenheit) as the water temperature already in the tank. If you are using a sink that has hot and cold faucets it is best to get the temperature right before putting anything back in. If you must do it from a hose or something that does not have a hot water option then I would get buckets that have not had any chemicals of any sort in them, ever, including fertilizers... mix warm and cold water in bucket to get proper temperature then pour that in.

But of course, mix warm water with the cold to bring the temperature up.

Cheers, I have two new buckets so I'm sorted from that angle.
Thanks for your quick response.

you might be able to get away with it as long as its not drastically hot, I do it all the time, as a matter of fact no one believes me when I tell them I take out approx 15-20% of my water and relpace it with straight tap water, I have never had a problem

We do 50% changes here on a weekly basis using water straight from our well.

CWC, are you saying it's OK to adjust the hot and cold temps on the faucet to get the water temp close to the tank temp? I always thought that, using any hot water coul dbe harmful. This is because warm water from the heater could be full of minerals from inside the tank itself.

Then again, I may just be reading your post wrong.

We have liquid rock here.
Anyway, I figure any buildup from the heater, less than 2 years old, is less harmful to the fish, than the city water a lot of fishkeepers have.

Got home from work and one was KIA. Done about 20% change. Getting up this morning another 1 KIA and one MIA . Not going to be home until Saturday now. Hopefully the 3 other troopers will survive until I get home on Saturday. I have more water sitting waiting. Hopefully the remaining 3 are battle hardened. Really need to get an ammonia kit. Will try and scrounge some cash together. Tis a pain this happened just before pay day.

Oh and no idea why I started treating them as Soldiers
