Stress coat and pyhton water change question

I am trying to make water changes easier, right now I use a python to vacuum the gravel and remove the water, I have been filling a 5 gallon bucket and filling the tank back up with a smaller pail, the 20 gallon tank is on a old wooden stand that the girlfriend hates when i get water all over the floor which happens all the time, I was thinking of using my power head in the fresh bucket of water and putting a hose on the end of it to transfer the water.

I went to a local pet store today and they told me all they do is add the water conditioner to the aquarium first and then add water right from the tap immediately after, so I decided to not go ahead with the power head idea and I bought a bottle of API Stress Coat.

If I just add the proper amount of stress coat to my tank and use the pyhton to fill the tank should this be ok for my fish??

Also had a question on using stress coat, the bottle says to add 5 ml per 10 gallons of aquarium water, so would i add 10 ml to my tank and add the water right after that??

I simply add the conditioner to the stream of water going back into the tank. You can add the conditioner first, but be careful that you don't pour it over your fish. I have read that folks have lost fish because they swam into the conditioner right after it was poured in.

Re: Stress coat and pyhton water change question

When I do my water changes, I fill up a plastic cup halfway with water then add the appropriate amount of water condition to the cup. Then I turn on the python and hold the cup in the aquarium so the stream from the python goes into the cup. This helps avoid dousing fish with the conditioner and also helps disperse the powerful stream of water coming from the python.

Re: Stress coat and pyhton water change question

I squirta little bit at a time as my tank fills back up. Sometimes I have just put the conditioner in all at once. Never had a problem either way. You should try to get the water to make as many bubbles as possible when it goes in the tank. The air will carry a lot of chlorine out of the water (like the aerator on your kitchen sink does). Chlorine is the predominant killer. Chloramine is what has to treated to be rid of. So if you can cut out as much chlorine as you can, the chloramine will be that much easier to get out.
