Why close threads?
There really is no point to it. If the threads have nothing worth talking about anymore, if all of the questions have been answered, they'll go away on their own. Each thread is a potential source of information not just for you, but for everyone on the forum. You may be done with a given thread, but someone else may want clarification on a point. My opinion is that unless an argument is brewing, and simply not answering won't stop it, closing threads is harmful to the forum. The only other time I think threads should be closed is when they're needlessly and repeatedly necro'd.

If you want to stop getting updates on these threads in your subscription list, all you've got to do is unsubscribe, which should be "thread tools" in the upper left hand corner of the thread.

You don't.

The 'My Threads' option is a list of all threads you have created, regardless of open/closed status.

Like Mathas said, there is no way to get them out of "My Threads"

If you want a list of threads that you want to keep track of, use "Subscribed Threads" just to the left of "My Threads" in the dark blue bar near the top of the page.
I apparently was wrong about being able to unsubscribe using "Thread Tools," but when you're in the "Subscribed Threads," you can click the box relating to the thread in the right-hand column of the page. Then go to the bottom of the column, and there's a little drop-down menu. In that menu is "delete subscription(s)" Choose that, click "go" and it will remove those subscriptions.
Any thread you've started or posted in will automatically show up in this section (until you delete the subscription, at least), but you can also add a thread manually by going into "Thread Tools" and adding the subscription there.

Does that help?

Good morning.

You can remove your own personal threads from "My Threads" by checking the box on the far right hand side of each thread you want removed. This is only for your own personal threads. Then scroll down to the bottom and click on delete threads. However, I don't know if this will remove it completely from the forum or not. I haven't tried it.
Ken

EDIT: I just tried it on one of my old threads and you indeed can delete it. Soft delete or a completely remove it delete. I don't know if this is strictly a Moderator function or not though Also as Lucy stated they do go away on their own after a while and they will also close after a certain amount of time. I don't know how much time has to pass before they close themselves.

It is a moderator-only function.

Note that the only threads I can perform this action on are the ones in my (sadly neglected) blog subforum:

A member can delete their own thread, but only if there are no replies. (I believe)
After that only moderator can delete a thread.
