Closed threads with no reason.

I've been here under a week so I'm just curious why recent threads are locked with no posted reason.

Sometimes if the answer comes up & the poster feels the need they can close their own thread.

Hello Mosin. Amanda is correct. Too, if a thread is really old and starts getting replies then one of the moderators may close it...may close old polls that don't contribute to fish keeping. Sometimes a thread may get out of control and have to be closed by a moderator too.

If a mod does close a thread, do they make a post saying why they are closing?

From my experience, every thread closed by a moderator includes a note about why it was closed. OP close their own threads without explanation all the time - I do this, but it's the OP's prerogative.

Yep, when mods close threads that have become non-productive, we almost always leave a post explaining why.
It's my opinion that the ability to close threads should be used very sparingly. Most threads are learning experiences for more than just the original poster, and closing them can limit this. After six months of inactivity, a thread will close itself. Only when very simple (usually "yes or no") threads are necro'd after three or four months or, as Aquarist said, when relatively pointless polls are kept active does it seem worthwhile to me.
