Re: And now it begins
I put the water in as soon as I got them at lunch a few hours ago and when I came home to look at the progress, I saw one little tiny very tiny 'fry'. I am not sure if it is a fish or the food that came with it and got in with the fry by accident or not, either way I am very happy and excited.

Re: And now it begins
I saw it again today but I found out it is really a larvae to an insect or something else. When I came home after school afternoon, I watched one of the fry hatching, and that is how I am able to make the assumetion the thing I saw yesterday is not a fish fry. The food also hatched today while I was at school.

Re: And now it begins
The only one so far is having some troble swimming since it is still fresh from the egg. It should be a free swimmer by the time I get home form football practice tonight.

Re: And now it begins
so i guess these killfish that you get will never be able to have babaies because they have to feel i guess like their life is being threatened to do it. They are really pretty fish..i am surprised theyre that pretty, they must in the wild have short lives, to depend on every season the pond drying up. are they freshwater fish. Also i thouht you werent allowed another tank so how are you going to raise them

Re: And now it begins
What do you mean that they won't be able to have babies? Please explain. I am going to hatch them, let them grow for about 3-4 weeks, put them in the empty 10 gallon I had java ferns in, and sell them when they are big enough.

Re: And now it begins
well didnt you say that these killifish have their babies when the pond is drying up. So the parents die but the babies live and hatch when there is new water. I am simply asking, if you raised the fish lets say and kept them, would they be able to have babies, since in the wild it seems this is how they do it. OR can they lay eggs in the water, the entire time and the babies can hatch in the aquarium. so do the eggs have to dry up or no? i am just curious

Re: And now it begins
The eggs have to be laid in the water. Then after about a week of them being laid, the pond/whatever dries up and the parents die. They(eggs) then must go through a 'dry' season where you just take out the peat and let it dry for about 24 hours and then bag it so it doesn't dry up any more, for about 6-8 weeks. After the weeks pass, add water to the container and wiat a few hours/days, and you should then see some fry swimming around. Sorry for the confusion. Hope it clears things up.

Re: And now it begins
The first hatched fry is swimming freely now and again but just doesn't have enough strength/energy to stay in a 'hovering' motion.

Re: And now it begins
Right no everything is doing great, the fry is swimming about an inch above the bottom and is eating the food I put in there for it. All is good over here.
